Up and coming artist Readey has dropped his new single My Head, an innovative Hip-Hop tune.
Ready’s style loosely reminded me of Eminem’s latest releases, with his original raw and crude rap evolving into a grime style with minimal rhythm. It seems to me that’s where Readey is heading to with My Head, building his style on low-pitched basslines and prominent beats.
It’s almost like going back to that Garage, Trap mood that MC’s geared their Rap on – as a matter of fact I thought about Dizzee Rascal for a second when I was halfway through listening to My Head.
Gloomy and introspective in his lyrics, Readey analyses the overflowing thoughts in his head falling into a loop made of trust issues and living the same day again and again.
It’s so easy to relate to if you’re questioning your everyday routine and finding yourself dwelling on the dichotomy “am I working to live or am I living to work?”
Scotland-based Indie Rock powerhouse The Decrees not so subtly crashed onto our radars with the bitingly raucous hit “Liberté” at the end of 2019.
Their riotous energy had us hooked from the prelude. If you could imagine an aural mash-up of Generation Terrorists-era Manic Street Preachers, Velvet Revolver, the Strokes, Babyshambles, you may be able to get an idea of what Liberté offers.
Guitarist Callum Bell deserves a monolithic ego for their ability to carve out such striking riffs and keep the momentum throbbing right the way through Liberté. While vocalist and synth player James Miller found the perfect balance between swagger and charisma through their high-octane performance.
We’ll definitely be keeping our ear to the ground to find out what comes next from the Decrees.

“He’s Acquired a New Face” was our first introduction to the Psych Garage Noir duo West Wickhams. Given their nostalgically artful yet intellectually pioneering approach to their sound, they instantly became an artist we want to hear more from in 2020.
If you can imagine what Joy Division would have sounded like if they laid off the reverb and offered quaint comedy instead of melancholy, you’d get a good idea what West Wickhams’ has to offer in their latest single.
He’s Acquired a New Face is the perfect track to have on your playlists if you’re looking to hide your head in the sands of aural escapism. It’s endearing, it’s immersive, and it throws you into a word of Noir fantasy complete with Post Punk atmospherics.

Coryn’s mission of statement is to make us dance and I can’t see how she could fail to stand by her statement when she releases songs like ‘Highs’.
Born and raised in a small town outside Reading, UK Coryn’s current music can be described as “Madonna music, aimed for the dance floor”. Her carefree vocals ride the new-age New Order meets garage & techno, resulting in a tune that invites your body to move. What I particularly appreciate about this song is its existential versatility: I believe that it perfectly fits a house DJ-set, as much as a techno DJ-set, as much as pop/mainstream music DJ-jet. Overall, it’s a great tune to blend with other great tunes when the set’s purpose is to get people to dance.
‘Highs’ is the closing track of Coryn’s 2018 EP called ‘Numbers’, the artwork of which I found notably intriguing.
If one of your favorite music lunches is chilled female vocals while Garage House is your favorite dressing salad to accompany it, then you should listen to ‘Highs‘.
Yesterday, I tested out the limitations on my spine and headed down to Astral Elevator’s all-dayer showcasing 15 artists who collectively proved just how versatile of an element Psych is when weaved into a soundscape.
It’s one thing to listen to your favourite accolade-showered artists performing, but it’s quite another to be in an environment which is sharing in the excitement of new up and coming artists, and that was very much a part of the atmosphere last night.
There were plenty of artists emitting an effervescent array of distinction last night, but here’s my top three bands that you’ll want to put on your radar sooner rather than later.
Yeah, sex is good, but have you ever seen Hey Bulldog live?
I’m not even sure that’s an exaggeration at this point. But what I am unequivocally sure of, is that Hey Bulldog has broken the mould with their dynamic genre-contorting sound.
The palpable virtuosity which I’d heard on their records is one thing, but seeing the sonic soundscapes crafted first-hand allowed me to appreciate the ingenuity in their heightened alchemic sound even more.
Nothing about Hey Bulldog’s music resonates as assimilative. From the structure of their unpredictably progressive tracks to the intensity of them, they are a forcible aural paradigm shift away from the usual tones which you’ll frequently find amongst psychedelically-inclined bands.
If guitar hero lists were constructed based on talent alone instead of the nostalgia which ‘iconic’ riffs offered, you’d find Hey Bulldog’s guitarist and vocalist Rob Manton’s name deservedly near the top.
And if you think any of that sounds like superfluous hyperbole, you can check out the Manchester-based trio for yourselves. I’d start with their recently released single “Death & Greed”, the refreshing veracity will have you hooked in seconds.
Phobophobes never fail to leave me mesmerised by their ennui-laden brand of bleakly carnivalesque Psych Garage Rock.
The South-London based DIY artist offers a rarely found intellectualism within their sound, but it’s so much more than conceptually artful instrumentals put against reverberant ominous vocals. Through the live performance, there’s a real sense that their music is a personification of their despondency. But despite the eerie bleakness, there’s also chilling incredibly danceable euphoria.
Their playfully sinister experimentalism is especially perceptible in their latest single “Blind Muscle”.
If you could imagine what the B52’s would have sounded like if they wanted to insidiously invade your subconscious you might be able to get an idea of what the single has to offer. And if there was ever an aural equivalent to David Lynch’s films, it’s the Phobophobes. Jamie Taylor’s commitment to disconcerting the audience with their menacingly charming stage persona is something that everyone should make an effort to witness.
There was no following on from the ritualistically caustic Italian fourpiece The Gluts last night.
As soon as the guttural vocals howled over the synergetic sonic instrumentals the energy in the room shifted in line with their frenzied, overdriven, atmospherically loud presence.
There’s certainly no shortage of angry artists putting out harsh noise at the moment, but The Gluts ability to make it melodious and rhythmically arrestive between the heavy bursts of biting noise is something that you’re unlikely to hear from any other artist.
Their Psychedelically-laced Noise Post-Punk is a feat of pioneering ingenuity, it may not be for the faint-hearted, but Post-Punk fans looking for blisteringly absorbing angsty catharsis should find plenty to appreciate about them.
When the prelude to a track has you bouncing, you know you’ve just stumbled across an absolutely stellar single. It makes the review part quite hard, but the energy behind Yogi Bairlines latest single Keep on Partying is as infectious as it is intoxicating.
The lyrics are exactly what you’d come to expect from a Garage Punk Rock party anthem. Keep on Partying came together as an infusion of Anti Nowhere League and Andrew WK. Yet, what really sold Yogi Bairlines for me was the fact that it was actually tangible that they were having fun whilst the track was recorded. The recording quality may not be the best you’ve ever heard, yet this just amplifies the raw energy that the band have mustered through the heavy instruments and even heavier vocals.

This raunchy, raucous Post Punk Garage Rock trio from Tallahassee, Florida have created a storm with their debut summer track Pickle Juice. Yes it’s a ridiculous name, but their punk guitar riffs, dubbed over vocals, and possibly one of the best basslines I’ve heard since I discovered Jah Wobble helps you to forgive their slight lack of maturity.
Naval Fuzz have created a sound is undeniably their own putting their own stamp on the Alternative genre, yet there’s a slight twinge of influences from bands such as Eighties Match Box B-Line Disaster, with the pounding guitar reverberation whilst the vocalists style is somewhat reminiscent of The Pixies lead singer Black Francis.
The band bring the freshest post punk sound since Public Image Limited as a contemporary cacophony of sound that is nought but intriguing. Through their sound you are treated to a glimpse into the seedy underbellies of these student revellers lives.
Fans are travelling all across America to taste Naval Fuzz’ sound live. Their basement band style gives them an adoring dousing of charm. In a way, I selfishly hope they don’t rise above it.

Beachdust is an eclectic musical project with a fondness for unexpected and catchy songwriting. Elements of pop and 60s beat clash with garage, indie and alternative, making for charismatic and personable patterns, just like bands such as The Black Lips, The Kinks or even The Strokes, just to mention but a few. Their recent single release, “Spider Baby”, is taken from the band’s latest studio album, Midnight Sally, which features 10 songs, including the single itself.
These talented musicians set out to bring something unique to the table: It is amazing how this clash of tones appears so organic and orderly: it’s not simple to pull it off, but Beachdust effortlessly succeeded in the task, doing a great job at perfecting their distinctive sound formula in a fun and lighthearted way.
“Spider Baby” is a great example of the band’s formula, going for a catchy, light and energetic vibe, matched with a set of compact, yet endearing lyrics.
For the very first time, record label HQ Familia are releasing a five track compilation ‘HQ Familia presents… HQF001’. A playlist of unique tracks across the East Midlands which represent the culture behind British urban music. Based in Leicester, the diverse individuals pay their dues to the music industry, with a promising attempt to portray the reality of modern day society. Embracing civic heritage, each of the artists showcase flourishing genres including UK Hip Hop, Grime, Garage, Future Bass and R&B. From start to finish, an unfeigned story is told which precipitates a variety of emotions throughout. There is not one sole narrative but a range of multiple perspectives shedding light on the struggles of social validity.
Charlie Georgio kick starts the compilation with a feathery proficiency, featuring Josh Notta in ‘You’. The free flowing melody dabbles between contemporary R&B, electro-pop and hip-hop, whilst enforcing a fairly mellow persona upon the track. Whilst this is one of the tracks that doesn’t necessarily focus on physical meaning, ‘You’ has more emotional depth than anything else. Georgio samples soulful characteristics underneath the spell that captivates him.
With a similar style to Lady Leshurr and Nadia Rose, Asher X takes a parallel stance of female grime by diving straight into a self-confidence heads on narrative, addressing the problems she’s faced with the men in her life. This track is the opposite of sympathising, and praises the strength and courage Asher X reflects as a woman where she exposes the wrong doings of men. Rather than permitting herself into grief, she jumps onto the offensive, making ‘Do One’ a track of total exclusivity.
As the compilation progresses, more genres are experimented. SunSun teams up with Harri Georgio producing a hip-hop and dub-garage style of track. ‘Waste My Time’ evolves into an energised anthem, where the synthesizing drums blur the lines of traditional hip-hop. The fast tempo component that flows freely with the dub resonance is what lifts the track up into a dance classic. And the endowed duo doesn’t just stop there, with lyrics that enforce relatable clarity, they are able to tune in with their audience.
The chemistry between the production of the tracks and the personal depth concealed is eminent, and as we reach a close to the compilation we have experienced new heights of emotions. The final two tracks share a correlation of a softer electro-rnb beat. Maniscooler and Dubdeep test the waters, integrating an electronic pulse with a debonair style of rap and untroubled vocals in the hook. It’s only natural the tone of the track is delicate, when rendering the crucial aspect of relationships in ‘Boyfriend’. In comparison to BLG’s ‘Which Way To Go’, the tone of the track becomes bleak and cynical. BLG toys with down-tempo electronic blips to enforce a heightened effect, whilst the backdrop surveys a haunting presence throughout the track. The struggle of friendship and brotherhood goes hand in hand with the surreal tone, drawing a different perspective in contrast to its neighbouring tracks of the compilation.
