Independent artist Joel Michaels latest single Giving Up (Done Dealing With You) took me right back to the 00’s with his nostalgic, anthemic approach to Pop. Whilst I’m usually adverse to the mainstream Pop soundscape Joel Michaels has an energy which you just can’t help falling in love with, which is pretty ironic considering that Giving Up is an anti-love song. Whilst Joel Michaels are sweet and charismatic and depict the breakup agony vividly, I have to say it’s the rap verse which unexpectedly comes into fruition which comprised by some of the steadiest bars I’ve ever heard incorporated into a Pop track. The momentum takes a massive shift and Giving Up progresses into a swirling vortex of synthy kicks, drops and electronic chaos.
