Dons Skiffle – G.Z.K.: Ambiently Experimental Lo-Fi Indie

“G.Z.K.” is the standout genre-transcending single found on Manchester-based Lo-Fi artist Dons Skiffle’s second album “Supermac Odyssey”.

Anyone with a penchant for music orchestrated by expressively creative artists who possess a perceptible ingenuity when it comes to pulling together pools of aural catharsis, Dons Skiffle is well worth putting on your radar. G.Z.K. may be a home recording, but the only audible sign is the intimacy which has been brought into the raw and candid tone of the single.

The spacey ambient mix lets quaint and tender synth notes take the lead through the smorgasbord of concordant effects which come together to create the perfect platform for Dons Skiffle’s softly unimposing vocals.

Experimentalism may run rampantly through G.Z.K. but through the solid snappy melodies, it is all too easy to get hooked into the hazy soundscape.

The Blue Apt. – Overall Girl: Nostalgically Serene Alt Indie

“Overall Girl” is the latest nostalgically serene single to be released by up and coming Alt Indie artist The Blue Apt. It had us instantly enamoured, and we’re sure we aren’t going to be the only ones finding ourselves pleasantly altered by the unique yet comfortingly accessible soundscape.

The single fuses together Jangle Pop Indie guitars, soft Jazz, and a pinch of Psychedelia which allows Overall Girl to exude mellow mellifluous vibes which are all too eager to soothe your soul. Yet, the true magnetism is found in the potency transfixing slightly lucid vocals.

If you could imagine Mr Bungle’s track Retrovertigo with even more intimately sweet aural feel, you’d be able to get an idea of what The Blue Apt. has leaked onto the airwaves. From the first few notes, the blissful tone is the set. Overall Girl goes beyond concordance and catharsis, the soundscape can only be accurately described as a melodically hypnotic.

John Turkey’s Nightmares provides a potent hit of experimental Lo-Fi alchemy with “Horse Girl”

Chicken Scratch by John Turkey's Nightmares

Self-describing his sound as “a blend of earnest psychobabble” was never going to quite allude to just how endearing his style of production is. John Turkey’s Nightmares’ may struggle with recognising the ingenuity in their own single, but they definitely didn’t struggle when it came to orchestrating the alchemy contained in “Horse Girl”.

The Alternative Folk track wasn’t composed to create easily digestible sounds, instead, the up and coming San Francisco-based artist went with an artistic approach by blending a myriad of different soundscapes together. From the concordance of 60s psychedelia, to haunting orchestral effects.

The unpredictably mesmeric single never allows you to feel comfortable and safe within the mellifluous melodies, the soaring strings are waiting to strike with disconcertment as the track progresses. Yet, one thing that remains as a constant through the track are the sweetly dampened vocals. While the vocals don’t always quite contend with the potency of the instrumentals, the shoegaze style of vocals bleeding into a seamless mix was the cherry on the cake.
