SmileEatingJesus – Polar Vortex: Controversial Gutter Pop

There’s controversial music and then there’s up and coming band SmileEatingJesus. Whilst their artist title is enough to potentially anger anyone who believes in Jesus, their latest album title “Anne Funk’s Diary”, will be enough to enrage plenty more people. With all disrespect to historical figures and religious icons aside, the soundscapes to the tracks on the album especially “Polar Vortex” were more than agreeable. With a sludgy garage rock style, their standout track Polar Vortex unfolds as a melodic indie arrangement, one not too dissimilar from what you’d expect from a more experimental Beatles track. Whilst there were no faults to be found within their approach to sound, it’s unlikely that’s what I will be remembering SmileEatingJesus for.
