Indie Music Blogs UK

The term ‘indie’ in the music industry has become so ambiguous it has practically become as subjective as the meaning of life. Whichever way it is defined, it is still a massive part of the music industry in the UK and across the globe.

Originally, indie referred to how an artist distributed their music. Over the decades, it became a catch-all term for artists sharing the same sonic off-kilter edge; and, of course, the same moody yet inexplicably cool aesthetic. Indie, as a genre, only came around as the result of experimental artists in the 70s wanting to bring a new sound to the airwaves; instead of solely hoping for commercial success after appeasing one of the major record labels.

Indie artists adopted punk ethos they started to push the boundaries of pop. Instead of commercialising their sound, they pushed it into post-punk, shoegaze, synthpop, Britpop, avant-garde, noise rock and dream pop arenas. For all that separates bands such as Sonic Youth, the Cure, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, Elliott Smith and Radiohead, there is still so much that ties them together, namely their attitudes and the loud discordant style.

Along with the bands, iconic venues such as the 100 Club in London, the Hacienda in Manchester, and King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow had a pivotal part to play in the traction of independent artists and music. New Indie labels, such as Rough Trade and Factory Records, were amongst the first record labels to truly embrace and encourage experimentalism and authenticity in the artists they scouted and signed – taking New Order and Joy Division as a prime example.

It may have been a while since there was an indie breakthrough act as successful as the Arctic Monkeys, but indie music has far from lost its resonance. Besides, Monkeys won over 42 awards and sold over 20 million records, so that’s going to take some beating, and they’re certainly not the only indie artists currently thriving.

The Welsh indie rock icons, the Manic Street Preachers, celebrated their first number 1 album in 23 years with the release of Ultra Vivid Lament in 2021. The Tarantino-Esque Liverpool outfit, Red Rum Club, released their debut album in 2019, and got to number 14 in the official album sales chart with their album, How to Steal the World, in 2021. Perhaps most impressively, the world’s first CryptoPunk rapper, Spottie Wifi, made just under $200k in album NFT sales in 90 seconds this year.

Psychosomatik showed their psych-rock ‘Roots’ in their progressively electric single.

Psychosomatik by Psychosomatik

Miami psych rock pioneers Psychosomatik warmed up the vintage overdriven tones to match their sun-bleached climate in their latest progressively surfy single, Roots.

If Pavement saw a little more sun, I’m entirely convinced that Brighten the Corners would have emanated the same colourful radiance of Roots, which hit the airwaves on March 13th. The influences of The Doors and The Beatles are also easy to note in the kaleidoscopic grooves of the release from the independent duo, which amalgamates influences from a wide range of artists and genres to orchestrate a sound that couldn’t be more authentic.

Experimentalism and accessibility don’t always come hand in hand; it stands as a testament to Psychosomatik’s songwriting chops that Roots is a hit that you’ll want to dig deep to immerse yourselves in from the first hit. The vibe couldn’t be sweeter.

Roots is now available to stream and purchase on Bandcamp.

Turncoat Billy looked through a ‘Kaleidoscope’ in their psychedelically vintage debut single

Indie nostalgia peddlers may have created a massive stink pile of indie landfill on the oversaturated airwaves after realising they can string a few chords together in a way that references the Strokes or Oasis; with their debut, Turncoat Billy is the refreshing soul-stirring antithesis. Familiar yet awash with endearing autonomy, anyone that wants to enliven their playlists with contemporary ingenuity can get a jump start from Turncoat Billy.

With their influence range casting a net over everyone from Big Thief to Chas n Dave to T.Rex to Warren Zevon, the outfit, born in a brewery in Tottenham, will pull you into vivid vintage colour with their debut single release, Kaleidoscope.

Their ruggedly sweet indie rock flavour is addictive from the first taste; with the 60s psychedelic kicks paired with the 70s renegade rock swagger and hints of the Maccabees, there’s no sweeter way to evade the malaise of modernity.

Kaleidoscope is now available to stream on Spotify.

Silly Love: Faith Louise drops dynamically reflective romantic love letter on 8th single Heartbreak

After last exhilarating us with her previous single Summer Fun, Faith Louise performs with maturing excellence on a love story which will tangle many souls into a web of wonder on Heartbreak.

Faith Louise is an Essex, UK-based pop singer-songwriter phenomenon which has released 7 successful singles and is signed to Regent Street Records.

It is a song about the unsureness and worry of your heart being broken in a relationship that’s actually a really healthy one. It explores the confusion of why such a good person has entered your life, and how the mind thinks about the what-ifs and maybes. All feelings many of us feel and can hopefully connect to whilst listening to the song.” ~ Faith Louise

Wondering how this love will conquer the moment when she doesn’t give it up quickly, Faith Louise sings with honesty and courageousness in this revealing message.

With exquisite vocals and a range that could make many listen twice, this is a rather lovely effort from such a caring heart who is in a dream of introspection.

Heartbreak from Essex, UK-based indie pop singer-songwriter Faith Louise is a sensational track which is surely cinematic in nature. Feeling stuck for a moment and wondering what the future is holding, we are opened up to a stunning performance by one of the most imaginative artists in the game.

Trip-hop goes baroque in Lakitah’s latest bullet to the monocultural mould, The Fall ft. EvenstAr

Lose yourself in the fantastical atmosphere of Lakitah’s latest single, The Fall, featuring EvenstAr; the baroquely histrionic brand of trip-hop melodically works to create a mise en scene of isolation and introspection.

The international collaboration project, led by vocalist and guitarist Dominika Zdrodowski, started as a lockdown-born endeavour, but as the struggle for hope is still as endemic as it was when we were commanded to keep distance between each other, and just as insular in our alienation, the project still thrives. You only need to slip into the artful opulence of the Fall to affirm that for yourselves.

The featuring artist EvenstAr takes influence from trip-hop acts, such as Portishead and Massive Attack; put against the monocultural-mould smashing beguile laid out by Lakitah, The Fall is an Avant-Garde emblem you will want to treasure for as long as you want to keep hold of your sanity.

Marlon Bianco Dials Major Tom in His Psychy Jazz-Funk Feat of Sonic Dystopia, Planet Coronet

https://soundcloud.com/user-277095369/planet-coronet/s-9FqWUOnhS3h?si=51dc22e2904242f797dc135424286ab8&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing

With a tonal palette spacey enough it wouldn’t be out of place spinning on a turntable in the TARDIS in a vintage Dr Who episode, Marlon Bianco’s take on psychedelic jazz-funk in his latest release, Planet Coronet, will have you transcending into outer space from the first synthy oscillating note.

Bianco took care of every instrumental, bar the reverently jazzy sax lines laid down by Jonny Chung, who well and truly embodies the spirit of jazz to bring you back down from the astral plane the synthetics have transported you to.

Unlike many of the lockdown-born projects, the solo endeavour from the North London-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, which started by laying a few chords down on a Roland keyboard, Bianco is an artist the airwaves would cry out for if silence should fall around his ingenuity.

His dystopia-encompassing sounds are reminiscent of the alien times we find ourselves insulated within, but it’s hard to shed a tear when the end sounds so euphonically sweet.

Planet Coronet will officially release via Other Planet Records on March 17th. Catch it on Soundcloud.

That’s Why I Gave You A Key To The Lock: The First To Fight ends up in the maze with Almost A Win

Released from their hugely enjoyable 13-track album The Saddest Champion, The First To Fight drop a Kings of Leon-like gem to admire for its raw texture and unpretentious lyrics with Almost A Win.

The First To Fight is a Salem, South Carolina-hailing Greenville-based indie alternative post-emo band who have matured like fine wine and are on a mission to represent their city.

The earliest iteration of The First To Fight was like a pipe bomb; an explosion of attitude dressed as a down and dirty vendetta wrapped in two minutes of shouting and slipshod guitar work.” ~ The First To Fight

Streaming into our lives with something rather consequential, The First To Fight have strengthened our rattled armour and brings the world a tremendously important song that digs deeper into being stuck inside someone else’s box.

Disappearing into our minds like that backroom that has many belongings, we are treated to a quality single with a real message to learn from.

Almost A Win from the electrifying Greenville-based indie post-emo band The First To Fight is a rather phenomenal soundtrack to the distant daze of not wanting to waste any moment. Sung with a pulsating edge and flowing with terrific power and roaring forces within, this is a monumental release made for current times.
