With no two singles from the duo ever the same, they keep their fanbase guessing what revivalist tones they will deliver next. Based on Da Ratman! It’s safe to say that they know just how to pull different stylistic elements together to energetically complement each other. It’s as hooky as any Misfits track, jangly as Johnny Marr’s licks and comes with devilishly macabre undertones in the same vein as The Creepshow. New Rock City – Right Now: A Raucously Charismatic Female-Fronted Rock Anthem

New Rock City released their latest single Right Now on February 26th, 2018 to treat rock aficionados to one of the sultriest rock anthems since Joan Jett was on the scene. I’ve always particularly drawn to a powerful lead female vocal behind a rhythmically eclectic sound, but there’s something extra that New Rock City bring to the rock scene. Right Now is unobtrusive, it’s seamlessly aligned through he palpable sentimentality of the lyrics along with Rossano’s vocals, yet it has all the edge you’d expect from a Rock track. Rossano is the epitome of the natural performer, her energy is timelessly infectious through her raucous attitude and charismatic euphoria which surrounds her. Krick’s guitars are a mix of soaring hooks and crisp melodies which ensure New Rock City is instrumental perfection.

The NY 4-piece band have already created quite the buzz around their music and there’s still more to come with the much-anticipated debut album due to drop later this year.

Super Love – Tell Me: An Alt-Rock Rebellion of Societal Oblivion

Super Love, the dynamic husband-and-wife duo, has unleashed ‘Tell Me’, a single that picks up where Le Tigre left off by blending lo-fi synthetics with complex time signatures and brashly protestive indie rock guitars. It defies convention and expectation, inviting listeners into a perception-shifting atmosphere which vindicates anyone trying to find meaning in a post-truth society.

The song’s unusual 7/4 time signature, combined with classic rock instrumentation and synths, creates a unique earworm which will pull you into the unapologetic rebellion time and time again. The dual vocal lines add a layer of dynamism to the track. While Jared’s imploring tones seek sanctity in these tumultuous times, Constance brings fire and frustration, painting a lyrical vignette of our contemporary search for salvation and optimism amidst fears of collective oblivion.

‘Tell Me’ is a rare feat – a single that not only ticks all the sonic boxes but also connects profoundly on a lyrical level. The Arcane Insignia opened an unholy doorway with their synthesis of classical instrumentation and prog rock volution, Vagrant’s Throne

The Arcane Insignia’s moniker couldn’t be more fitting following the unveiling of their latest orchestrally aligned acoustic prog rock single, Vagrant’s Throne. The New York City duo set a new benchmark in the genre with this 8-minute epic, released as part of their LP, A Violent Whisper.

The dark iteration of classical music still maintains its elegance and opulence as it grapples with the complex signatures of progressive rock’s audacious spirit and the chameleonic vocals which seamlessly shift from the histrionics of New Model Army to the rage and rancour which transcends the furore of Pantera.

Formed by Lodrö Nyima, The Arcane Insignia consists of Noah Heau on cello and Nyima handling vocals, percussion, acoustic guitar, and piano. Their music, a unique amalgamation of influences ranging from Tool and Steven Wilson to The Contortionist, allows the classical instrumentation to venture into darker territories than it is typically accustomed to, creating a scintillating new domain where the ornate, cutting classical strings meet cathartic aural oblivion. This fusion also opens an unholy doorway to a realm where anything is plausible and everything is cinematically striking.

Following in the footsteps of bands like Ne Obliviscaris, Vagrant’s Throne, which unravels as a compelling exposition on classism, proves The Arcane Insignia’s commitment to breaking down antiquated barriers.

The Parallels Between Legacy Acts’ Faux ‘Farewell’ Tours and Independent Artists Deceptively Using Scarcity Marketing

Farewell Tours

After Ozzy Osbourne decided that his No More Tours tour (1992) and his No More Tours II (2018) tour didn’t give him the chance to properly say goodbye to his fans leading to the announcement of more farewell shows at Aston Villa, I couldn’t help but delve deeper into the phenomenon of faux farewell tours as a marketing ploy and how they correlate to independent artists deceptively using scarcity marketing to sell tickets.

While I understand that independent artists need to use a ‘by any means necessary’ ethos to shift tickets and ensure there are more punters than staff in a venue, there are infinitely better ways to promote gigs than by manipulating fans and gaslighting them into believing they will be among throngs of other people when really, they will rock up and awkwardly try to fill space in an almost entirely empty room.

And, of course, while some false alarm farewell tours may be completely innocent and playing one shouldn’t mean that the door to the live music industry is closed forever, manipulative marketing can corrode the relationship between artists and fans through loss of trust and diminished loyalty when it becomes apparent that short-term gains are more important than long-term relationships. Even though there is never any lack of interest in comeback tours which follow farewell tours, for fans who have gone out of the way to attend final shows, it is natural that a significant proportion of them will be left feeling exploited after being driven by the compulsion to see the final chapter in that band’s live performance history.

The Infinite Loop of Farewell & Comeback Tours

The music world is rife with tales of bands and artists who’ve announced their final tours, only to return to the stage later. Here are just a few examples.

  • The Rolling Stones has hinted at retirement several times over the decades. Despite numerous ‘farewell’ tours, they continue to surprise fans with new tours – take every farewell from the Stones with a pinch of salt.
  • Cher is known for her spectacular ‘farewell’ tours and has made a habit of retiring and then returning to the stage. Her ‘Living Proof: The Farewell Tour’ (2002-2005) was followed by a Las Vegas residency and the ‘Here We Go Again Tour’ in 2018.
  • Jay-Z announced his retirement in 2003 with The Black Album. However, this retirement was short-lived, as he returned with Kingdom Come in 2006 and has been active in the music scene ever since.
  • Mötley Crüe signed a ‘cessation of touring’ agreement in 2014, declaring they would never tour again after 2015, Mötley Crüe blew up the contract in 2019 and announced their return to touring.
  • LCD Soundsystem announced their disbandment in 2011, complete with a grand farewell concert at Madison Square Garden. However, they reunited in 2015 and have been active since.
  • Fleetwood Mac, known for their tumultuous band dynamics, has had several ‘final’ tours. Despite various line-up changes and farewell tours, they continue to reunite and perform.
  • KISS embarked on a ‘Farewell Tour’ in 2000-2001. However, they returned to touring and have continued to perform live, including their ‘End of the Road World Tour’ which started in 2019.

How Farewell Tours Are a Highly Effective Marketing Ploy

To understand why some artists may keep coming back time and time again, it is crucial to understand what the announcement of such a tour can do to the ticket-buying public.

Creating a Sense of Urgency

The announcement of a ‘final’ tour creates a sense of urgency among fans. It’s the last chance to see the artists perform live, or so it seems. This urgency can drive ticket sales, as fans rush to seize what they believe is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Amplifying Emotional Engagement

Farewell tours often strike a deep emotional chord. They’re not just concerts; they become poignant events, celebrations of an artist’s career. This emotional angle can be a powerful driver for fan engagement and can elevate the perceived value of attending the concert.

Boosting Publicity and Media Coverage

Announcing a farewell tour is a surefire way to capture the media’s attention, generating buzz and heightened publicity. This increased media coverage can translate into broader awareness and potentially attract even casual fans or those who might not have considered attending a concert otherwise.

Reinvigorating Interest in the Artist’s Work

A farewell tour can also reignite interest in an artist’s discography, leading to increased sales of albums, merchandise, and digital streams. It’s a way of putting the spotlight back on their body of work, perhaps introducing it to new audiences.

Setting the Stage for a Comeback

In the rhythm of music careers, a ‘farewell’ tour followed by a comeback can be a strategic move. The return can be marketed as a triumphant or unexpected encore, tapping into the joy and relief of fans who thought they had missed their last chance to see their favourite artists perform.

Financial Incentives

Lastly, the financial aspect cannot be overlooked. Farewell tours often command higher ticket prices and can be more lucrative due to their ‘last chance’ nature. A subsequent comeback tour can then capitalise on the renewed or sustained interest.

While not all farewell tours are disingenuous, the pattern of artists returning after a ‘final’ tour suggests that, in some cases, these farewells are more of a strategic intermission than a true finale.

How Independent Artists Try Their Hand at Music Marketing Manipulation

Independent musicians often employ scarcity marketing when selling gig tickets as a strategic way to create a sense of urgency and exclusivity, which can boost sales and fan engagement by exploiting music fans’ compulsion to do whatever they can to stave away fear of missing out. However, when it is all smoke and mirrors and no urgency is needed, attending the show can be the anti-climax of the gig-purchasing and attending experience. You know what, I’m not even going to say anything else on this note; I will just leave you with the comedian Josh Pugh’s parody of independent artists trying to shill tickets in this way.

Every Progression is a Prog-Rock Revelation in Tempus Cucumis’ Single, It’s Alright, The Sun is Shining Today

With their seventh album, Rêves, the progressive rock duo, Tempus Cucumis, exhibited how innovation can drive classic rock forward, not as a separation of what came before, but a sublime continuum you can follow and lose yourself within. The seminal single, It’s Alright, The Sun is Shining Today, uses timbres hotter than the tarmac on the Sunset Strip in July to pay an ode to the capacity of sun rays to salve the spectrum of human tribulation, which may sound like a stretch until you remember that, for the most part, we have the same basic requirements as a house plant, beyond the complexities our autonomy bestows on us. With twists and turns amidst the ebbing and flowing momentum, you can’t help but strap yourself in for the ride and succumb to every new corner the track meanders around, exposing an even more breathtaking sonic scene.

Find out why the city never sleeps in snailosaur’s indie rock vignette, Apartment Boxes (nyc poem)

Forget what you know about New York from the over-romanticised depictions and acquaint yourself with the true nature of the cityscape, which juxtaposes grit and grime with the monolithic architecture and the egregious egos of Wall Street wolves. snailosaur’s standout single, ‘Apartment Boxes (nyc poem)’, taken from their indie rock LP, Talk Therapy, paints a fond vignette of the infamous city over the luminous tonality of their angular guitar lines, which weave elements of new wave into the nostalgia-kissed release.

While the upbeat melodies embed the single with a light and dreamy air as they cruise through the Pavement-esque progressions, the vocals act in contrast with their nonchalant drawls, adding depth to the track as they allude to the sins and cultural salvation of the city that never sleeps – and now, thanks to snailosaur, we know why; the working class are confined to coffins as they live and breathe. Yet, suffocation is a small price to pay to walk the streets that become portals in time, if you know which avenues to take.

Romance isn’t dead; it was raucously revived through Todd Michael Chapman’s latest single, Mesmerized, which gives all the heart-in-throat electricity of Aerosmith’s I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing while channelling a fervid authenticity that stays true to the singer-songwriter’s rustbelt inspired melodic rock edge.
