Indie Music Blogs UK

The term ‘indie’ in the music industry has become so ambiguous it has practically become as subjective as the meaning of life. Whichever way it is defined, it is still a massive part of the music industry in the UK and across the globe.

Originally, indie referred to how an artist distributed their music. Over the decades, it became a catch-all term for artists sharing the same sonic off-kilter edge; and, of course, the same moody yet inexplicably cool aesthetic. Indie, as a genre, only came around as the result of experimental artists in the 70s wanting to bring a new sound to the airwaves; instead of solely hoping for commercial success after appeasing one of the major record labels.

Indie artists adopted punk ethos they started to push the boundaries of pop. Instead of commercialising their sound, they pushed it into post-punk, shoegaze, synthpop, Britpop, avant-garde, noise rock and dream pop arenas. For all that separates bands such as Sonic Youth, the Cure, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, Elliott Smith and Radiohead, there is still so much that ties them together, namely their attitudes and the loud discordant style.

Along with the bands, iconic venues such as the 100 Club in London, the Hacienda in Manchester, and King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow had a pivotal part to play in the traction of independent artists and music. New Indie labels, such as Rough Trade and Factory Records, were amongst the first record labels to truly embrace and encourage experimentalism and authenticity in the artists they scouted and signed – taking New Order and Joy Division as a prime example.

It may have been a while since there was an indie breakthrough act as successful as the Arctic Monkeys, but indie music has far from lost its resonance. Besides, Monkeys won over 42 awards and sold over 20 million records, so that’s going to take some beating, and they’re certainly not the only indie artists currently thriving.

The Welsh indie rock icons, the Manic Street Preachers, celebrated their first number 1 album in 23 years with the release of Ultra Vivid Lament in 2021. The Tarantino-Esque Liverpool outfit, Red Rum Club, released their debut album in 2019, and got to number 14 in the official album sales chart with their album, How to Steal the World, in 2021. Perhaps most impressively, the world’s first CryptoPunk rapper, Spottie Wifi, made just under $200k in album NFT sales in 90 seconds this year.

I Feel Your Pain: Iphis reminds her father of their special all-lasting love on I Will Be There

Leading us deep into the toxic but relatable story which almost shattered her in half from witnessing a parent show their dark side so blatantly, the wildly creative Iphis returns with a real account that should put many into a deep reflective gaze, I Will Be There.

Iphis Well is a French indie pop singer-songwriter who loves to make people dance and she is known for her stunningly authentic aura, incredible style and striking hairstyles.

I wrote this song for my father. It talks about how the narcissistic perversion of my mother affected our relationship and mental health. This is also a love letter, to remind him that despite of the distance we have now, I will always be there for him, until the end.” ~ Iphis Well

Sung with marvellous tenderness and love for the betterment of humanity, Iphis Well shows us it is imaginable to love even if it’s rather hard sometimes.

With ear-tingling vocals and so much to think about, this is a rather important song made with true care. After understandably holding back from releasing this for a while, we find a courageous anthem to love unconditionally.

I Will Be There from French indie pop singer-songwriter Iphis Well is a hauntingly exquisite reminder that no matter what happened in the past, there is a bond so deep waiting to be held. Steering us wonderfully through a hugely private moment, we feel the passion of a maturing soul who guides us into the true love she will never forget. No matter the past.

Seattle psychotropic duo Thee Simulation drops weighty new single TRAIL OF DEAD KINGS

BLEAK LIVING by THEE SIMULATION

Experimenting with diverse dark atmospheric compositions and digging through those powerfully constructed canyon walls, Thee Simulation has led us into the ominously described TRAIL OF DEAD KINGS which might put startled bones into a shiver-layered fantasy to terrify the living daylights out of most humans.

Thee Simulation is a Seattle, Washington-based duo that creates psychotropic musically inspired exorcisms with Colin Dawson and producer/engineer Paul Walsh navigating the choppy waters of potential doom.

Soaking blood-drenched desiccated limbs into tunnels many would rather avoid without a second of thought, Thee Simulation has gruesomely eaten a hole into innocent hearts. Previous calmness has been radiated out of place with some aplomb on this haunting creation made for only the brave.

TRAIL OF DEAD KINGS from Seattle’s Thee Simulation is a totally back-spasm-like experience which has put the universe on notice. If you love to be frightened and like to find out where demons live, this is for you.

Tortured to the core and bursting through with a magnetic appeal, Thee Simulation peels back the dusty curtains and has made a modern-day evocative classic to consume greedily.

Welcome Stranger set an intimately artful indie-folk score with ‘You Need Me’

https://soundcloud.com/user-853304457/you-need-me/s-ZPUmj7J2TKU?si=5a1550f8f29f44ce8fffbf3b65c94e6a&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing

From chamber strings to honkytonk Americana tones to indie art-rock crescendos, Welcome Stranger rolled with all the evocative punches when instrumentally composing their latest single, You Need Me.

After taking inspiration from the likes of Ben Howard and Justin Vernon, the devilishly talented duo scribed their own eloquently indie folk signature in You Need Me, the lead single from the debut album, Running Out of Miles. The LP title is heartbreak material alone.

With the whisky and melancholy-soaked vocal lines, you will lock into the lyrics from the first hit of this stunningly orchestrated single, which definitively proves that beauty still thrives in the world, regardless of the entropy and disillusion that so easily manifests whenever the full picture is in view. Yet, with this poetically candid single, Welcome Stranger exhibits that intimacy and intricate detail is everything.

You Need Me will officially release on March 31st. You can hear it via SoundCloud.

Interview: Grandmastaskunk inspires us all with wizard-like beats

Learning more about the music scene and telling us how it is, Grandmastaskunk sat down with us recently and let us deeper into his vision. We found out more about what it takes to be the best and what the process actually entails.

Thanks for your time Grandmastaskunk. Please tell us readers about the time you first knew you wanted to be a musician.

Grandmastaskunk: I immediately knew I wanted to be a Lyricist/Artist the first time I listened to the late artist Big L’s “98 Freestyle”. He was a truly inspiring artist in my life RIP.

Where in the world do we find you today and what was it like growing up there?

Grandmastaskunk: I am currently on tour but I spend a lot of time in Colorado. Growing up in Texas I had no stability in my earlier years moving back and forth from different cities and states.

What is the production side like and do you enjoy the creation process?

Grandmastaskunk: I personally only use FL (with register key lol) Making beats was very complex at first, but with help from Marvylus, years later I can have a mix done fairly quickly and I love every single second of the creative process.

What was it like working with the Wu-Tang Clan legend Raekwon?

Grandmastaskunk: That show specifically was legendary. LoudLifeCrew brought me out to perform with them and I couldn’t believe I was on the same stage as him, nonetheless in the same room. As a child, I was very much influenced and inspired by Raekwons’ Only Built For Cuban Links and The Purple Tape. Shoutout to Raekwon & SwizZy B.

Who inspires you to be better each day?

Grandmastaskunk: My daughter motivates me to work harder and do better every single day. Aside from that we share the same birthday on October 29th.

Where are some good live music spots to visit when we’re in your local area?

Grandmastaskunk: I would recommend Light Speed Curations, 306 S 25th St, Colorado Springs, CO.

Finally, how would you describe your sound to a music novice?

Grandmastaskunk: Southern Hip-Hop/Rap, Lofi, Trap Metal, Indie Rock, SoundCloud rap, Chopped & Screwed, Scream rap and Experimental.

Dance With The Devil: Velcroes drops tight street track LBT

Directed by Sincere Blanco and burrowing through those alleys only those with a keen eye for detail can see, Velcroes has opened up our eyes to what is really going on with the visuals for LBT.

Velcroes is an Atlanta/Ghana-fused rapper with a seemingly positive outlook on life and blends in pulsating pop to enliven all sleepy speakers.

Detonating in with a shades-fueled abandon and so much to learn from for the naive who chose to avoid the notion, Velcroes has engrossed us with a dominant performance to smash our mindsets apart. He seems to understand with careful aim, what is needed to survive those rusty roads loaded with smokey evil eyes waiting to gnaw on innocent faces.

LBT from Atlanta/Ghana-fused rapper Velcroes is an enlightening look deep inside the streets plugged with many temptations and snake-like tendencies if you look inside the wrong box.

Foxing through with a confident demeanour and slicing jagged-edge-like flows to stream away any menacing rattles which could cause deadly bites if not treated quickly.

Malcolm Duff brought us right back down to humble ground with his quiescent folk score, Leaving

https://soundcloud.com/user-883383372/leaving

Along with his paramour co-creator, Da Silva, the folk singer-songwriter Malcolm Duff reminded us why his sound is so unforgettable with his latest single, Leaving.

To do this feat of melancholically sweet folk justice, I’ll refrain from the tired Cohen comparisons and lean into the cinematic fluid grace of the orchestration that wouldn’t be out of place on the Wild at Heart soundtrack. The evocative movie script ending of a score entrenches you in its sentimentality, which alludes to how distance is as much of a state of mind as it is a matter of miles.

Some may say that searching for unconditional love is simply being in love with the idea of love itself, but Malcolm Duff put those romantic cynics to shame, by proving that only love can save us all. In a time when it is so easy to fixate on arbitrary notions of success, the gentle acoustic strings and breezy harmonica blows in Leaving will bring you right back down to humble ground.
