Indie Music Blogs UK

The term ‘indie’ in the music industry has become so ambiguous it has practically become as subjective as the meaning of life. Whichever way it is defined, it is still a massive part of the music industry in the UK and across the globe.

Originally, indie referred to how an artist distributed their music. Over the decades, it became a catch-all term for artists sharing the same sonic off-kilter edge; and, of course, the same moody yet inexplicably cool aesthetic. Indie, as a genre, only came around as the result of experimental artists in the 70s wanting to bring a new sound to the airwaves; instead of solely hoping for commercial success after appeasing one of the major record labels.

Indie artists adopted punk ethos they started to push the boundaries of pop. Instead of commercialising their sound, they pushed it into post-punk, shoegaze, synthpop, Britpop, avant-garde, noise rock and dream pop arenas. For all that separates bands such as Sonic Youth, the Cure, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, Elliott Smith and Radiohead, there is still so much that ties them together, namely their attitudes and the loud discordant style.

Along with the bands, iconic venues such as the 100 Club in London, the Hacienda in Manchester, and King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow had a pivotal part to play in the traction of independent artists and music. New Indie labels, such as Rough Trade and Factory Records, were amongst the first record labels to truly embrace and encourage experimentalism and authenticity in the artists they scouted and signed – taking New Order and Joy Division as a prime example.

It may have been a while since there was an indie breakthrough act as successful as the Arctic Monkeys, but indie music has far from lost its resonance. Besides, Monkeys won over 42 awards and sold over 20 million records, so that’s going to take some beating, and they’re certainly not the only indie artists currently thriving.

The Welsh indie rock icons, the Manic Street Preachers, celebrated their first number 1 album in 23 years with the release of Ultra Vivid Lament in 2021. The Tarantino-Esque Liverpool outfit, Red Rum Club, released their debut album in 2019, and got to number 14 in the official album sales chart with their album, How to Steal the World, in 2021. Perhaps most impressively, the world’s first CryptoPunk rapper, Spottie Wifi, made just under $200k in album NFT sales in 90 seconds this year.

Kwun Interview: Allowing himself to fully flourish on debut release Supernatural

After impressing us with his epic debut single from October 2022 called Supernatural, Mexico/UK-based creative Kwun takes us deep with the realms of the healing arts and more with such an insightful interview to embrace. Showing us what it’s like to be a music producer and artist, we find a kind soul who just wants to make timeless music.

We appreciate you taking some time out of your busy day to speak with us, Kwun. Firstly, where are you based today and what is the music scene like currently in your local area?

Kwun: It’s a pleasure, I appreciate you taking your time too! So, I’m here in Tulum in Mexico, which is where I live for some of the year. Between here and the UK.

I really don’t know what the music scene is like here, to be honest! I was a healer in a previous profession and still tend to gravitate more towards these kinds of things. Tulum is that sort of place. That said, I have a project on right on now where I’ll be working with some local musicians so will be checking out the scene more to find the right musicians.

What’s it like to be a musician and producer? Do you feel like it’s an advantage or a disadvantage sometimes?

Kwun: That’s a really interesting question, and one that no-one’s ever asked me before! I guess I see it all as part of the same thing, like the whole creative process. The musicianship, the songwriting, the producing. It’s how I’ve always done it. So it’s neither an advantage nor a disadvantage. Though if it had to be one, then I’d go for advantage! I usually have a very clear vision of what I want the song to sound and feel like, and having the skills to see that through is a definite plus.

Though I can see benefits of working with a producer also, for sure. Would totally be up for that, for a future project. It would have to be approached with a completely different mindset though, and would be a different process altogether.

As for disadvantages, it’s has never occurred to me that it has any disadvantages. I work with a bunch of session musicians anyway, so it’s not like I play all the instruments myself. And the session musicians always bring their own flavour and flair and usually something really magical to the mix. Which I love.

In fact with my future single release, ‘Ancient Ageless & True’, I don’t actually play anything on it at all, so I just produce. And I sing. I always say I’m doing karaoke on my own track with this one!

If you met someone who had never listened to music before, how would you describe your creations?

Kwun: Well, they’re a very eclectic bunch of songs with a few rousing instrumentals thrown in. Be prepared to be taken on a journey through sound, textures, beautiful melodies, visiting many different genres on the way. We’ll work our way through from Beatlesque songs, to funk and hard rock, via some Afro-beat inspired grooves and some Jazz. Each track is different from the last, juxtaposed in such a way that will tantalise, intrigue but yet somehow sound familiar and feel like home! Some lyrics will make you think, others might move you to tears, as they have done with some of my friends who’ve heard certain as-yet-to-be-released tracks. The lyrics invoke strong emotions, putting you in touch with your humanity! And many of the tracks are journeys within themselves.

If you were in charge of the music industry for a day, what would you change first and why?

Kwun: I would open up the possibility to take more risks with artists, meaning I’d widen the range of what is let through and marketed in the mainstream. The thing is, people’s music tastes are a lot more eclectic and intelligent than what the industry would sometimes give them credit for. So that’s what I’d change.

Do you have any tips for independent musicians who are new to the game?

Kwun: Well, I’m pretty new to the game myself, but what I’d say is build a really strong team. You’ll need their help! And stay true to what you want to create, try not to be swayed by what you think others want from you. Obviously, an appropriate amount of diplomacy and playing the game is necessary. We’re all doing our job as best we can! But just be true to who you are artistically, and the rest should fall into place.

What’s the best advice you ever received?

Kwun: Well, what comes to mind right now is something my mentor, Francesca de Valance once said. She said to be more expansive and to allow myself to show up as all of me. And to not squeeze myself into a very small box! Words to that effect. It was a permission slip in a way to do more of what I was already doing.

Last of all, where can we see you live next and what goals do you have for 2023?

Kwun: No live plans as yet, I’m afraid, but I’m aiming to shoot a video of a couple of my songs here in Mexico with a live acoustic band. The band will consist of a string quartet and some of the local musicians I mentioned earlier. Not exactly seeing me live in person, I know, but hopefully the next best thing.

For 2023, I’m releasing my debut album, titled ‘Ancient Ageless & True’, after the song I mentioned earlier. There will be a few singles leading up to that, including the title song itself. I will shoot more music videos. I have a few other goals which are in the early stages of planning, so don’t want to say too much yet, but hopefully I’ll be to able to share some exciting news with you all in due course.

Birdeatsbaby Interview: Shaking our core with sinister new release Illuminate

We sat down with the hugely intriguing progressive post-metal band Birdeatsbaby to chat more about their shadowy new release Illuminate. They open up the curtains and lead us into a bone-rattling interview of significance and show us why supporting the local music scene is so vital.

Who is all involved with the Birdeatsbaby team?

Mishkin: Well, there’s four of us – Anna Mylee (drums), Hana Piranha (harp, cellos, violins, vocals), Garry Mitchell (guitar, bass) and myself, Mishkin Fitzgerald (vocals, pianos, synths). We also have a manager called Simon Field who keeps the whole thing running… he’s the unseen member of the band and he knows all our dirty secrets, haha! Apart from that, we’re totally independent and run everything by ourselves. It’s a lot of work, but we’re very happy to be in control of our own destiny, and run things the way we want to.

Which music scene do you prefer and where are the best underground spots to find proper music in: Brighton or London?

Mishkin: I’d say my favourite music scene is the metal one – there’s so many sub-genres and you never see the same thing twice. The people who go to those gigs are always so mellow and there’s always a great community vibe going on. You know if you fall in the mosh-pit that you’ll be picked up again and dusted off! I also think it’s one of the few scenes that has survived and still has people at shows. Metal fans are true music fans and they always want to see something new, not just stick to the bands they know. I love that, metal all the way.

If a brand new band came up to you tonight and asked for advice about how to survive the music game, what would you tell them?

Mishkin: Get out now while you still can! Ha, no I’m joking. I would say to them – focus on getting your music just right, it’s more important than your image. Once you’re set up then be genuine, make friends with similar bands, create your own scene and help each other out. Go to shows, support your local bands and treat other musicians how you would like to be treated. Don’t play shows for free/exposure (if you can help it) and be prepared to struggle a lot! The music industry has never been more difficult than it is today, so supporting and helping each other out is more important than ever.

If you could open up for any artist in the world, who would it be and why?

Mishkin: I think each of us would have a different answer, but probably for me it would be Opeth. They’re another artist that crossed multiple genres but still have that signature sound. They aren’t as heavy as they used to be, I prefer their death prog-metal albums, but I would still be over the moon if we ever got to support them!

Do you have any wild touring stories you’re allowed to share with us?

Mishkin: Yeah, loads just ask our manager Simon! Hmm… what can I tell you, I mean we used to party pretty hard on tour but it got a bit out of hand, we’ve calmed down a lot these days. There was the time we got banned from a church… and the time we crashed a rental car and the tour manikin flew out the back window naked… the time we played a show to one fan and then spent the night in a sex dungeon… and the time I climbed up and danced on a bar in Ohio and people put dollar bills down my pants? I mean, to be honest this is a whole separate interview!

Finally, where can we catch you live next and do you have anything big planned for 2023?

Mishkin: We haven’t got any shows booked currently. We’re focusing on recording the album, HEX, and should have some shows in the Spring/Summer but we’re holding out until the music industry gets a bit more stable, times are pretty tough for touring artists these days so we’re just playing it safe and making music at home. The best place to see us though is on Patreon – we play lots of livestreams and release secret music and videos there, so if you want the inside scoop then that’s where we’ll be.

Nestle into the safe chasm of alt-90s nostalgia with I’ve Tried Sleeping’s single, Without the Faintest Idea

With a moniker as defiantly dejected as I’ve Tried Sleeping, we knew we’d find ourselves head over heels when we dug into their eponymous debut album.

The standout single, Without the Faintest Idea, unravels as though Bob Dylan wrote The Truman show. Sonically, the single is an intersection between the college radio rock vibes of R.E.M., the striking viscerality of the Cranberries and to perfectly round off the single, there’s plenty of unadulteratedly classic rock riffs that drive the searing hot tones right into your synapses while they uplift you from the drudgery of the modern age into the safe chasm of alt-90s nostalgia.

If anyone has a chance of making it in the sorry state the music industry is in, it is the five-piece outfit fronted by Charlie Edwards. They’re a powerhouse, but that doesn’t get in the way of their effortless affability, which makes their tracks a pleasure to endlessly play on repeat. They get better with every listen.

Ma Bell aka Kathy Bell Interview: A True American hero

https://www.facebook.com/mabellfishingblues/videos/?ref=page_internal

Sometimes in life you meet someone who just wants to sing for the love and nothing more. This is the story of Ma Bell aka Kathy Bell. She is the ultimate underdog and loves making others happy. A selfless soul awaits.

Hello there Ma Bell aka Kathy Bell. How are you doing today and have you found that the music scene is properly back in your local area?
Ma Bell: I have found that this last year has been incredibly busy. I feel the music scene is definitely back.

You’re a DJ and also a songwriter with Bob McGilpin. Please explain how that fusion started and how creating songs makes you feel?
Ma Bell: I began in music at an early age, playing piano in the Church of God where my grandfather preached for 57 years.
I always had a passion for music but never thought I was good enough and had to go through quite a lot before believing in myself. I had written a silly Tobacco Barn song due to seeing a barn smoking with my friend and manager, Ruth Brown. She said write that into a song but I had no idea how that could be a song. A friend said get ahold of Bob McGilpin. I have to say he is the very best and not only is a co-writer but an amazing Friend. We now have 2 songs. America She’s Cryin co-written with Bob McGilpin a Platinum hit but also Freedom Truckers co-written with Bob McGilpin that has hit platinum twice.

Never too old to dream. I love your motto. It’s so true. Do you feel you’re in a dream while on stage and living out your destiny?
Ma Bell: I absolutely feel it is my dream. I have had the dream of performing on the Grand Ole Opry Stage one day since a child. I never give up on that and work hard. I have gone through sickness etc and am chasing my dream late in life, but still believe it can be possible as long as I never give up and keep working hard.

Who do you make music for and where do you call home?
Ma Bell: My home is in a very small town in Indiana called Sheridan. I make music when an inspiration hits. It is usually something from life. It can be funny or it can be serious.

Do you have a favourite song that we should definitely hear you sing live?
Ya all come! I love having fun in character as “Ma Bell” with my audience. The more they sing and tap feet, the more animated I become.

Can we spot you live before 2022 ends or do you have some events slowly cookin’ on the stove for 2023?
Absolutely, that would be awesome!

London’s True Being pulled us from polarity and put us ‘Back on Track’ with his alt-pop jam

True Being took us back in time with their latest single, Back on Track, which reminisces on the less polarised and partisan days when we could see the world in full colour instead of through the divisive prism of black and white.

What it will take for people to get back there isn’t quite clear, but Back on Track is certainly a step in the right direction. The quirky alternative single which plays with mystical eastern rhythms and playfully polyphonic electro-pop layers is an efficacious reminder that things haven’t always been this way, and there is no good reason why they are engrained in our modern cultures the world over.

The London-based artist makes a habit of holding a mirror to the absurdist facets of our world through his assertion that artists have a role to play in the shaping of our future to take the power away from Musk and his kin, politicians and celebrities. He’s been likened to LCD Sound System, Nick Cave, Talking Heads and John Grant, but all reminiscences in his flamboyantly eccentric sound are incredibly fleeting.

ORCHAD Interview: Showing us deep inside the SKIN

Turning the volume up Canadian style and taking our hearts into a new galaxy, we sat down with ORCHAD to chat more about their heavy new release SKIN. Keeping it real and showing us the challenges of the current underground alternative scene in their hometown, this is an insightful look into how it started for the exciting Montreal band.

Hello there ORCHAD. Thanks for taking the time to slice it up with us and chat about your electrifying new single, SKIN. Firstly, please tell us who is in the band and how did things all start musically?

ORCHAD: Thanks for having us. We’re ORCHAD, a duo that’s made up of a singer and guitar player. On vocals we got Julian Della, and on guitars we got Justyn Vynn, and it’s been that way since 2018. ORCHAD started as the brainchild of Julian. After struggling to find members to complete a band, he decided to write and release the music on his own. He wanted to ground the music in rock, but be free to write anything he wanted regardless of the genre. He wrote and recorded a 6 song E.P. that ended up being ORCHAD’s first E.P. “Vices & Desires” of which he completely funded. During the recording process for that E.P. Julian called up good friend Justyn to add a few guitar solos to the tracks. Julian had wanted Justyn several times to join him, but he’d stopped playing in bands professionally. Through the process of writing and recording the solos, Julian asked again if Justyn would join, and after being floored by the level of quality with Julian’s songwriting, and his tenacity, he accepted. From there, it’s been both their goals to make you dance, and make your head bang.

Montreal, Canada is your hometown. What was it like growing up and is the local underground music scene thriving currently or not yet?

ORCHAD: Montreal is really an awesome place culturally. There’s no shortage of entertainment in the city, everything from Art shows and displays, comedy festivals & open mics, music events, so many restaurants, the nightlife is incredible. It’s brutally cold in the winter, humid as hell in the summer, and the city streets are always under construction, but we’re incredibly fortunate to be able to live in a city with so much culture, and personality. It really does inspire.

There are two ways to look at the underground music scene. On one hand, the music scenes are thriving in that there are so many acts with so much talent, and so much variety. On the other hand, there isn’t much visibility available to a lot of these acts, there’s not a ton of A&R around, especially for a metropolis like Montreal with such a diverse amount of music coming out of it. There are some very healthy scenes like the Metal scenes, Hip-Hop and Drum & Bass music scenes, but outside of those, there aren’t really any Music blogs, radio stations, etc. that are dedicated to Alternative or Rock music, especially ones that don’t fit neatly into those lines. Something we feel is important for a local scene to really thrive.

Your music seems to blur the line and is completely original. How would you describe your music style to someone who has never heard a song before?

ORCHAD: That’s our Achilles’ Heel. What is our music style? The only way we can describe it is that we make you dance, and make your head bang. It’s Rock N’ Roll with pop sensibilities, but there’s tasteful shred guitar, and electronic elements. We both love Guns N’ Roses, and Led Zeppelin, but we’re also huge fans of The Weekend, and Dua Lipa. We’ve had a hard time attempting to define our sound, and when we’ve asked members of the music industry, fans, family/friends, other artists, and those within the entertainment world, they also draw a blank to who we can compare ourselves to. If we’re to put something down, it’s adventurous Rock N’ Roll/Alternative, or Aggressive Pop!

Please name a few bands or role models who inspire you all to reach greater heights?

ORCHAD: There’s so many, and over the years the main artists we’re inspired by has changed, but right now The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, Fall Out Boy, Palaye Royale, Billie Eilish, LeBrock, Muse, Avenged Sevenfold, Guns N’ Roses, Queen, Elton John, David Bowie.

Ok, let’s dig deeper into your new release SKIN. What is the vision behind the track?

ORCHAD: SKIN deals with Toxic Hook-Up Culture, Passion, Non-Commitment, and Resentment. We’ve both had our fair share of these relationships, and we’ve both been active participants and fully aware of it. The song talks about a relationship based solely on sex and nothing more, the passion within it, the repeated cycles of attempting to end it and the eventual resentment of the other person who completely mirrors you who also doesn’t want to love you. The best description we’ve heard is that SKIN is an Anti-love song, that SKIN relates more to modern relationships than a ballad does.

Your debut album is set for release in the summer of 2023. What can new and old fans expect from this upcoming project?

ORCHAD: Expect to bang your head, expect to dance, expect for it to be fun, have some humor, be positive, and cynical, and expect that our sound will not fit into what we’ve already released before. No two ORCHAD songs sound alike, and we’re keeping it that way, but what we’ve got ready excites us so much and we can’t wait to share it with the world.

Last of all, do you have any tours or live shows on the horizon?

ORCHAD: We do! Our next show is on December 17th at Piranha Bar in Montreal, followed by some dates in Ontario in February (dates are still being settled now). From there, we’re still planning!

Craymo Interview: Leading us into the real story on Love Me Or Leave Me Alone

We sat down with the ultra focused music producer/singer Craymo who shows us deep inside his music career. Currently showering the world with the pulsating new single, Love Me Or Leave Me Alone, we got to know more about sync placements, golf and Elvis.

Well, hello there, Craymo. Thanks so much for your time and we appreciate you chatting with us today about Love Me Or Leave Me Alone and more. First of all, did you dream about being a musician while growing up?

Hi there Llewelyn! Glad to meet you and happy to be chatting with you. Yes, I have always been a dreamer! Being a singer and performer was all I ever wanted to be as far back as I can remember. My earliest memories involve me singing into my Mom’s hairbrush in her dresser mirror all the while dancing and gyrating on my parents’ bed to Beatles and Elvis songs!

You’ve won many awards recently and have had many placements. Tell us more about the exciting progression in your career?

I have been writing songs since high school. I have had a lot of life experiences since then and have written a lot. The more you do something, the better you get at it. My songwriting has reflected the peaks and valleys in my life. I feel I am a much better songwriter now and recently I have been starting to receive praise for my songs. It’s nice to be recognized and acknowledged for my passion in life. I recently won Best Indie EP for “Love Power” and Best Pop Dance Song and Best Dance Music video for “One Love One World (We Are One) Freedom Mix” my song that promotes equality, inclusion, Hope, love, human rights and peace. I believe that we are one human race and we should treat each other with kindness, courtesy and respect. I wrote an anti-bullying song entitled “Be Myself” and a song about suicide prevention awareness entitled “Moment” after my 1st cousin Michael took his own life. I write about things I am passionate about and I am glad other people can relate to them.

Orlando, Florida, is your hometown. Do you spend most of your time there or where do you feel is the best place to find creative energy during these challenging times?

My current hometown is Orlando. I do spend a lot of time here. The creative energy here is very profound. I feel the best times to create are in the silence, the quiet times, meditating. Allowing yourself to tap into the cosmos. Every song I have ever written seems to have come to me from some other place or dimension.

Please let us know more about your golf game. Do you play regularly and what is your handicap?

Ha! My golf game is just for fun! No, I haven’t played in a while. My handicap is probably a fifteen.

What was the vision behind the creation of Love Me Or Leave Me Alone and who is this song for?

Love Me Or Leave Me Alone arose and was written out of angst and frustration over several dysfunctional relationships. We have all been there, the person who wants to spend the rest of your life with you then the next day they, all of a sudden, decide they want to break up! It’s total devastation, and it really messes with your heart and soul. It’s an ultimatum song.

Gaining sync placements is such a key avenue to a better revenue stream. Which platforms have you noticed actually assist you?

Yes, I am trying to focus more on getting sync placements for my music. I have had a lot of success by making personal connections with music supervisors and film makers. I like Music Supervisor.com/We Get Music, Music Xray and Tracks and Fields.

Last of all, do you have any tours or live shows on the horizon?

I don’t have any tours or shows lined up for the new year but “you never know what you least expect the most!” One of my Dad’s favorite sayings! I feel it’s time to perform on television again. The opportunity is knocking!

Magnus Ferrell put us on the same high with the hazy alt indie RnB pop vibes in ‘Love Drunk”

LA singer-songwriter, Magnus Ferrell, shared the intoxication with his latest single, Love Drunk. As it dropped, a new niche in alt indie-RnB-pop was carved. With Daft Punk-style galvanising highs written into the funky organic grooves, the pink, hazy euphoria comes at you in waves.

Part of Ferrell’s salaciously scintillating authenticity is owed to his jazz piano background. Partly due to his uninhibited boldness when harmonising his uplifting pop harmonies and his determination to make a serious impression on the industry. Given that he’s opening for The Psychedelic Furs in San Diego despite the drastic genre difference, it’s safe to say that he’s well on his way. We couldn’t be more stoked for him.

With the consistently infatuated themes of his singles in his short and sweet discography, you can’t help but get invested in what drops next, like it’s your brand-new binge-worthy Netflix series that you’d happily lose sleep for.

Love Drunk is now available to stream on Spotify. Stay tuned for fresh serenades by following Ferrell on Instagram & TikTok.
