The Tazers’ ‘Dream Machine’ – trippy, fuzzed up retro rock from South Africa

If Kasabian, the Strokes, Jet, or The Vines had come from South Africa and taken a little more acid, they’d probably have sounded pretty much like The Tazers on ‘Dream Machine’; a fuzzed-up, retro garage-rock psychedelia with a ton of drum fills, vocal harmonies, and mosh pit-fuel.

There’s some trippy, reverb-and-phaser-soaked slowed breakdown sections, some proper heavy riffing, a ton of paradiddles and flams, a little dash of the Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured’, and maybe some smatterings of proper 70’s Hawkwind or Deep Purple in the mix too. Nonchalant vocals, that repeating distorted guitar riff, and a wash of hi-hat tambourine across the track, giving ‘Dream Machine’ a sleazy, groovy old-school rock feel from the South African three-piece – make no mistake, this is proper rock’n’roll.

DigB uses their Malaysian roots to rhythmically revitalise Rock in “Vortex”

It was a pleasure to get acquainted with Indian Alt Rock virtuoso DigB through the official music video to their standout single Vortex.

By fusing elements of Rock with the rhythmic roots of their hometown of Malaysia, you can expect the guitar licks to ensnare you with their blissfully paced canter. After signing with Bentley Records, USA, that’s a sure sign of even bigger things to come from the solo artist who has enough dextrous flair to transfix fans of Ritchie Blackmore.

Artists create music for a wide range of reasons, for some, it’s fame, for some, it’s expression, but for Dig8, you palpably get the sense that his soaring dynamically sonic soundscapes are born through nothing but passion and dedication to the art form.

It’s Pop Alright, But Not As We Know It.

Of course there is a place in music for new ideas, finding new territory to explore and new boundaries to push but sometimes the familiarity of the musical comfort zone is all that is needed. And whilst It’s My Day might easily be dismissed as just another slice of indie-pop, that is to over look the fact that it is a brilliant slice of indie-pop. If you don’t want to explore the mainly niche and non-commercial back waters of as an intrepid musical explorer then why not juggle familiar musical building blocks and just simply use them to create something more impressive, slicker and infectious than those around you.

And that is exactly what Andrej does so well here. Pop sensibilities are tempered by the song having its foot on a rock throttle, able to power up or decelerate at will, commercially astute writing is driven by pulsing, funky bass lines and wonderful chorus dynamics make this the sure fire sing-along track of the summer.

Pop gets a bad name, has been tarred and feathered by one too many production line, dance routine driven, auto-tuned diva. But this is pop and this is great. This is what pop should be and hopefully can be again, a perfect example of why be “alternative to” when you can simply be “better than…..”
