Indie Music Blogs UK

The term ‘indie’ in the music industry has become so ambiguous it has practically become as subjective as the meaning of life. Whichever way it is defined, it is still a massive part of the music industry in the UK and across the globe.

Originally, indie referred to how an artist distributed their music. Over the decades, it became a catch-all term for artists sharing the same sonic off-kilter edge; and, of course, the same moody yet inexplicably cool aesthetic. Indie, as a genre, only came around as the result of experimental artists in the 70s wanting to bring a new sound to the airwaves; instead of solely hoping for commercial success after appeasing one of the major record labels.

Indie artists adopted punk ethos they started to push the boundaries of pop. Instead of commercialising their sound, they pushed it into post-punk, shoegaze, synthpop, Britpop, avant-garde, noise rock and dream pop arenas. For all that separates bands such as Sonic Youth, the Cure, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, Elliott Smith and Radiohead, there is still so much that ties them together, namely their attitudes and the loud discordant style.

Along with the bands, iconic venues such as the 100 Club in London, the Hacienda in Manchester, and King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow had a pivotal part to play in the traction of independent artists and music. New Indie labels, such as Rough Trade and Factory Records, were amongst the first record labels to truly embrace and encourage experimentalism and authenticity in the artists they scouted and signed – taking New Order and Joy Division as a prime example.

It may have been a while since there was an indie breakthrough act as successful as the Arctic Monkeys, but indie music has far from lost its resonance. Besides, Monkeys won over 42 awards and sold over 20 million records, so that’s going to take some beating, and they’re certainly not the only indie artists currently thriving.

The Welsh indie rock icons, the Manic Street Preachers, celebrated their first number 1 album in 23 years with the release of Ultra Vivid Lament in 2021. The Tarantino-Esque Liverpool outfit, Red Rum Club, released their debut album in 2019, and got to number 14 in the official album sales chart with their album, How to Steal the World, in 2021. Perhaps most impressively, the world’s first CryptoPunk rapper, Spottie Wifi, made just under $200k in album NFT sales in 90 seconds this year.

Interview: Jesus B takes us deep into beautiful Alaska

We recently had a chat with the multi-skilled musician all the way from ice-capped Alaska, Jesus B. Surging through with a 2013 Macbook Pro, small island life and where the best places are to watch live music.

We appreciate your time and for speaking with us. Firstly, what is your favourite way to start your mornings and what is a usual breakfast entail?

Jesus B: I usually wake up, brush my teeth and shower. Then I get ready for work. I work on a Coast Guard base and eat breakfast there, usually something like eggs, bacon, and whatnot. I’m not in the Coast Guard though btw!

Please let us all about your latest music and what songs should we be listening to?

Jesus B: I just released an album called “Yours To Give” which is some of my best work, also anything from my “Jesus B. Best Songs” playlist on SoundCloud is good too.

How did you first get into music and what connected you to this art form?

Jesus B: I started about ten years ago with my 2013 Macbook Pro when I discovered my ability to have fun doing something new, what I like about music is that I can express my feelings and hopefully make someone else’s day a little better. My name “Jesus B.” is inspired by a psychotic break I had when I was 18 where I thought I was Jesus LOL.

What was it like growing up on a small island in Alaska and what are your fondest memories?

Jesus B: I lived in a small island of 60 people yearly, my some good memories were of the freedom I had. I would kayak to school everyday. My fondest memories were spending time with my friends and learning who we were while growing up in a way that not many people do.

What are the perks of being a music producer?

Jesus B: What I love about producing my own music is that I have more freedom to make my own style of music in the alternative/emo setting. I can play around with different elements and that helps me tell my song’s story a little better. I love using guitar, it’s such a beautiful instrument.

Where should we go watch live music in Alaska?

Jesus B: Well I think Anchorage is most likely the best place in Alaska to see live music, however I will be performing live here in Sitka soon, I might try to make a film about it.

Last, what kind of music do you personally like and how does it inspire you?

Jesus B: I love Fall Out Boy, Taking Back Sunday, and Lil Peep mainly, the pain and intricate display of emotions in their delivery leaves a lot to the imagination and is well executed. I aspire to make music like them.

You Said I Put You Through: Ali Hugo feels rather lonely on All Alone

Feeling left alone in the damp corner and rather desolate in this bone-chilling world, Ali Hugo wonders if his future is bright or if the darkness is slowly looming to grab his fleeting soul away forever on All Alone.

Ali Hugo is an Ontario, Canada-based rock singer-songwriter, blogger, dancer and video producer who is signed to Mirage Records.

Hugo started his music career at the early age of eight when he joined his family “Leo” band as the lead singer. During his teens, Hugo began the “Spin Around the Mall Tour,” gigging at various shopping malls.” ~ Ali Hugo

He is one of the true underground legends. Ali Hugo rocks out like better days and shows the kids what vigorous music sounds like. All Alone might be one of the most important songs heard yet in 2023. This is honesty at its pure core.

All Alone from Ontario, Canada-based rock multi-creative Ali Hugo is a solo-filled reminder that good quality music with verve and determination is still available. With a haunting story and so much to unwrap with fierce abandon, we feel a striking song explode right before our eyes. Made with passion and ear-splitting vocals to take many back into classic times, this is a good old-fashioned proper single to blast on full volume.

The gloves are off in Tough on Fridays’ swaggeringly infectious indie alt-rock hit, The Awakening

Taken from their trailblazing alt-rock, indie, and grunge amalgam of an LP, The Encore You Didn’t Ask For, Tough on Fridays’ standout single, The Awakening, is a sure-fire hit of vindication for anyone who knows how bitter-sweet goodbyes can be when betrayal was the final parting shot.

With the same energy as Shitlist by L7, the grungy and Riot Grrrl to the core powerhouse lived up to the hype that has been brewing around them as they’ve taken the Texas music circuit by storm in the last six years.

The compellingly raw vocal lines add a demure touch to the swaggering power rock instrumental aesthetics of the track, which prove how much Tough on Fridays has honed their sound. Their infectious scream-the-chorus-from-the-top-of-your-lungs appeal is only getting more visceral with each new release.

It’s rare to find an outfit offering as much substance as style, but Tough on Fridays is anything but your run-of-the-mill paint-by-numbers outfit. Their soul, scorn and scuzzy riffs are just a few of the reasons you should reserve a place for them on your radar.

The Awakening is now available to stream on Spotify.

Max LaMont captured the vibe of Hollywood in the summer with his latest single, The Last Day of June

LA alternative artist, Max LaMont, didn’t hang around bringing the summer vibes this year; his latest single, The Last Day of June, which traverses bitter-sweet teen romance tropes through an alt-bubble gum pop tonal palette, debuted on March 31.

Fans of The 1975 and the Weeknd won’t want to miss out on the intoxicating 80s RnB pop vibes that are superlatively synthesised in the intoxicating hit, which teases what is to come from his forthcoming EP.

The magnetically shy artist’s charisma is undoubtedly a major part of his appeal; everything he turns his talents to is raw and definitively the real sincere deal. Beyond his relatability lies his classically trained virtuosic flair; he is trained in operatic and musical theatre; as a result, he’s been in a myriad of live productions, including Oklahoma, La Boheme and MASS.

The Dirt originated allegorical psychedelia in their debut LP, Agitator.

Few Manchester music fans are strangers to the disquiet deliverances of The Dirt’s wordsmith, Jack Horner, who has been storming stages with his abrasively arresting recitations of the tolls of PTSD and orations of the graffiti on the toilet walls of iconic Manchester venues.

Standing alone, Horner’s words in his solo spoken word project, Leon the Pig Farmer, carry enough metaphoric weight to leave a bruising mark on the psyche. The curveballs in his conceits open a collective of wormholes for the mind to venture down before perceptions shift around his vindicating socialist manifestic narrations. As a part of the dualistic powerhouse, the juxtaposition between his no-prisoners poetry and effect-layered guitars is enough to tear the rug from beneath you and plateau you on a new kaleidoscopic tapestry.

The Dirt’s debut LP, Agitator, starts with a true-to-form snarled spoken word piece, which prises your eyes open in Clockwork Orange style to the systematic failures of our belligerently nefarious government. Right off the bat, the strength of the dystopic imagery sends you into a spin as the psychedelic guitars, courtesy of Sachiko Wakizaka, whirl around the repression rebellion.

From definitively Madchester instrumentals to desert rock droning originations, the soundscapes psychedelically curtail the spoken word conviction just enough to make each of the eleven tracks a palatable mind-altering cocktail. It’s hard to name a favourite, each single has its allegorical merit, but being driven to tears by the existentially delicate single, What’s the Story, had to be a personal highlight before the euphoria surges through Ignorance is Bliss, which transgresses entropy into rapture.

Grab a copy of Agitator via the Golden Believer Records Bandcamp page and watch the live launch on April 14 at the Peer Hat.

The Q-Days – Underboard: Alt-90s Nostalgia Has Never Been Kaleidoscopically Sweeter

The Brighton-based alt-rock outfit, The Q-Days, is driving nostalgia into the next generation of British guitar music with their dreamy kaleidoscopic 90s Britpop-kicked tones and cathartically honeyed vocal lines. Their latest single, Underboard, is sweeter than Sally Cinnamon under the duress of the choral progressions that lick anthemic soul into every honed note.

With escapism, freedom of expression and euphoria as their triadic ethos, they stand for everything we should be giving an ovation to in the UK right now. It’s the pits, but one thing is for sure, our polluted waters are the perfect breeding ground for prodigal sons of rock n roll that salvation seekers will want to flock to.

After spending their foundling days developing their craft before it reached the airwaves and live stages, The Q-Days were always going to be primed to make a killer debut. So far, they’ve opened for Youth Killed It, The Rifles, and Bilk, but if any breakthrough act is definitively headliner material, it’s The Q-Days.

Underboard will officially release on April 7th. Check it out on SoundCloud.
