Soul Trap

Up and coming Trap Soul artist Jay Threatt teamed up with Smoov to create his latest sensually immersive drop “Like Money”.  The smooth rhythm of the track sits right on the contemporary curve with the hype of the beat sitting in the kicks of the 808 and the sensual vibe brought by the R&B melodies. Jay Threatt was able to vocally set himself apart from your average R&B artist through his lack of use for autotune, instead his magnetic vocal command seamlessly fed into the instrumentals of Like Money. There’s plenty of hyped energy to sink your teeth into to Like Money when it comes to the beat, but it’s easy to feel that the lyrics and the sentiment behind the track didn’t quite do Like Money justice. While there are enough sultry grooves in the track, the comparison of women to money doesn’t seem overly evocative.

Up and coming soulful songstress Jazmyn Alexis has recently released her second album “Cheesecake II: Sliced”, whilst there were 10 mesmerising tracks on the album “Get Me Right” instantly caught our attention. It’s not all too often you’ll hear vocals which exude pure soul over the trickle and rattle of a Trap beat. Over a piano melody, yes, but the R n’ B artist took a prodigal approach to her standout single to create the perfect platform for her perfectly styled, smooth vocals. Yet, it would seem that her ability to wax lyrical is also absolutely on point judging by the single rap verse she weaved into the mix.

If you’re looking for a Jazz-soaked fusion of Trap and Soul, look no further than Knownjack’s latest single No Tags. The track may have only been 1:45 minutes long, but that’s all the time you need to recognise that Knownjack is an artist with a slick, sultry style that will set him apart from the rest of the underground Rap artists. The Long Branch, US-based artist’s ability to charismatically wax lyrical didn’t fail to draw me into the mix, with perfect meter and rhyme the rhythmic orchestration unravels through waves of lucidity. Under the production of Ross, each tantalising note draws you into the concordance of the melody, I can’t wait to hear a full length mix from Knownjack, if he can pack that much of a punch in a track under two minutes long, there’s no telling what he could do with an album.

There are few Soul artists that can beguile you as quickly as She. With her new track ‘Say It’ she creates a deeply immersive composition of music which is fuelled by her palpable passion and pain. The Trap style beat reverberates in the background creating a melancholic cacophony of ambient sound. She’s vocals rests above the track with seamless ease, her clear-cut yet Soulful style isn’t something that you come across every day. I have no doubt that She’s pioneering style is one that could be easily universally adored. The haunting lyrics compared with the chill of the Trap is bewitching. The Chicago born and raised artist uses her music to vent and release her emotions to share with her fans. Her domineeringly strong aural alchemy which she created through Say It is haunting through the strong narrative which she utilises in her sound. She is currently working on her brand-new EP. After checking out Say It I’m 100% hooked on her story telling sound.

We’ve all been there post-break up where we feel compelled to spit spite at our ex’s and let them know just what they walked away from. Now, we don’t need to. We can just listen to Relly Cole’s cathartic new Soul Trap mix Letter to my Ex. Toledo, US Rapper and all round musical enigma Relly Cole has an outstandingly resonant style which he uses to pour his lyrics through to create a hauntingly melancholic track. Yet the Trap melody that tentatively fills this soundscape with ambiently electric sounds that creates an uplifting aural alchemy to this melancholic Soul Trap track. Letter to my Ex is the perfect addition to any break-up playlist. I’m not the only one that has them, right?
