If sex really does sell, Shona, the latest single by Cardiff production duo The Vanities, featuring Kaysha Louvain, has all the ingredients of a multi-platinum proposition.
The funk-fuelled reinvention of retro soul delivers all the swagger of Red Rum Club through a full-bodied arrangement, complete with brass to bring warmth to the production, as hypnotically layered harmonies rise through the mix, filter through your lungs and kinetically compel you to get into the groove.
There’s a knowingly seductive streak running through the single, with its disco sensibilities giving the throwback aesthetic enough rhythmic persuasion to coax a few inhibitions onto the dancefloor. The brass brings a generous taste of vintage glamour, while the vocal harmonies provide the smoothness that keeps the arrangement weightless.
Following their 2025 collaboration, The End of Love, The Vanities and the award-winning Welsh singer-songwriter reunite for another excursion into retro-inflected pop.
Produced at Shabbey Road Studios with Al Steele of The Korgis, Shona also features Ryan Jones, AKA Mr Poison, of Electric Six on bass, bringing an additional dose of funk to the earworm, resulting in a groove-conscious release with an affectionate appreciation for the seductive excesses of vintage soul and disco.
Shona is now available on major streaming platforms, including Spotify, via PYST/The Orchard/Sony.
