Pop-Punk quartet Monkey Knife Fight releases fiery single Seeing Red

Four-piece Pop-Punk band Monkey Knife Fight has dropped their single ‘Seeing Red’, it’s energetic, it’s honest and it’s truly amazing.

This female-fronted band needs all the praise and recognition for creating such incredible music, pulling inspiration from Pale Waves and Paramore. The story behind the lyrics is based around miscommunication, infusing this anger and frustration through a highly energetic piece of music.

They give their own modern day take on their style, it’s fiery and has a whole lot of angst being pushed through, it’s distorted in places but that doesn’t sway away from the fact it’s super lively, the vocals are more on the Pop style, embracing the high notes that are hit and having these booming vocals that are sure to be attention grabbing.

This band has so much potential and ones you should be adding to your playlist. it’s about time this year had a bit more of a modern day twist on Pop-Punk and these guys definitely brought that.

Rya Park – Bad Name: A Feisty Alt Indie Earworm

The latest single “Bad Name” from up and coming Indie artist Rya Park isn’t to be missed. Especially for fans of Amy Winehouse, Garbage, Arctic Monkeys, Lily Allen, and The Black Keys.

The Australian artist mixes the soul of Winehouse, the magnetic attitude of Shirley Manson, and absorbing Blues Rock riffs similar to The Black Keys. All wrapped up in a polished, pulsing, visceral massive sound which Arctic Monkeys used to offer before Alex Turner tried to assimilate Bowie.

It’s quite a potent mix. And it leaves us with no question about how much potential lingers in Rya Park’s resounding approach to Indie. Another thing it leaves us with is an all too welcome Indie Pop earworm which means that Bad Name will require repeat attention.

If you’re ready for that much aural commitment, you can check out Bad Name for yourselves by heading over to SoundCloud now.

Persepolis – No Pleasure Inside: It only takes Two

Persepolis are a French Progressive Alternative Rock band hailing from Mont-de-Marsan. Whilst their lyrics are in English, their styling is delectably European. They command a certain je nes sais quoi in their sound. The drummer and vocalist utilises deep ratting drumbeats as an under tone to their delectably light riffs whilst projecting emotionally charged vocals.

The band members Milo Dumartin and Robin Jourdan may just be the best alternative rock duo since The White Stripes. They have a wonderfully melancholic sound that’s highly resonant. The band count Radiohead & The Smashing Pumpkins as their top musical influences, they’ve adopted their pensive style along with more upbeat indie acts such as The Hives, BLOC Party and the Arctic Monkeys. They subtly infuse the Indie Grunge harmonies into their music to create a mellifluous sound which draws you by the violent rage of the guitars.

No Pleasure Inside is just one of the tracks off their debut album Sixty Miles An Hour which is available to download or purchase via Bandcamp.

The Routines – ‘di Arfar; The Best Welsh Band Since The Manic Street Preachers?

Ever had the pleasure of listening to listening to Welsh lyrics over an undercurrent of surf styled psychedelic rock? Nope. Neither had I until I pleasantly stumbled across The Routines latest hit ‘di Arfar. The only way to some up their sound is to imagine a cross between The Manic Street Preachers and the Arctic monkeys.

The Routines are made up of 3 extraordinarily talented musicians who implore their working class oppression to create an infectious sound that you can’t help but get behind in raucously euphoric ecstasy. No review of The Routines would be complete without mentioning the mesmerizing talent of the guitarist and his delectable  power he has over his riffs that have the power to suck you in until you’re completely immersed in the charismatic cacophony of sound that is being bestowed upon you.

The Routines are certainly not a band that likes to take themselves too seriously as you can gather from the video in ‘di Afar. Their rat race malaise is something that has the power to resonate within everyone. Even though I couldn’t make out a word of the lyrics, their energy conveyed the message and the evocative emotion behind the track poignantly. Their other tracks incorporate English lyrics such as ‘Christening’ however there’s something quite special and refreshing about listening to lyrics in a foreign language.

Black Beach Baby – Nothing – Band Explores The Melodies And Energy Of Brit-Pop On New, Exciting Single.

Black Beach Baby set out to create an eclectic, original and edgy sound – somewhere in between pop, indie and alternative rock, but with a slick, modern sound. The band is quickly becoming a solid name within the local music scene, and not only: their recent release “Nothing” is actually with something!

Sorry, I just couldn’t resist. Cheekiness aside, this song is a great example of the band’s remarkable sound and ability to focus on high-quality songwriting that feels engaging and appealing.

“Nothing” feels very natural for the band, as Black Beach Baby dives into a direct arrangement where interlacing melodies are essential to the “movement” and feel of the track. The song really strikes for its raw and emotional energy, combined with the skilled musicianship of the band members. The track is a particularly amazing example of the band’s taste for energy and dance-friendly grooves. The vocals in the song have a broad scope and can easily swing from low to high, really controlling the dynamic response of the whole track, adding energy when needed and kicking it back when some more intimacy is required.

On this particular track, Black Beach Baby’s work reminds me of artists as diverse as Arctic Monkeys, The Shins or Kaiser Chiefs, going for a very powerful and instinctive approach that really adds appeal and interest to the song.

Miles Blue Spruce: Progressing Forward With Sounds Of The Past

Be courageous. Be honest. Be compassionate. Be Talented. Most importantly be yourself. This has to be Miles Blue Spruce’s mantra, his passion for music exudes in every aspect of his journey. In another era; he would have been an endearing but soulful – rock front man at least twenty years his senior. Lucky for us, he wasn’t and we can enjoy the powerhouse singer, amazing showman, and incredible musician who’s also a pretty amazing audio engineer.

I recently had the pleasure of listening to an original piece entitled, “Flame,” in the musical realm Miles may have succeeded where others have failed, in authenticity. “Flame,” is a beautifully written contemporary rock that brings to mind passion, love and unrelenting passion. The song opens with some exceptional guitar riffs, dynamic tones, and it even utilizes some classic rock chords, patterns, and traditional tempos. The exceptional vocal melodies provide accessible and dynamic tones as it builds at full length in intensity and energy. There’s a slight stream of consciousness in the lyrical delivery which only enhances the classic feel.

Miles’ voice, although light and crisp provides such an intense trance that seems to seamlessly pull you in with just the right amount of riffs and adlibs. Production and arrangement wise this song although similar in quality is slightly above what you may be used to with indie artist. It’s crisp, very clear, there’s no oversaturation of reverb, there’s no unnecessary enhancements to the vocal patterns only pure artistry. The song keeps a basic arrangement through several distinct sections with only some fine adjustments to the bass line and slight additions of a few blues infused chords joining the ever-present classic guitar. This piece has been perfectly molded into a well-orchestrated symphony of diversity. Its classic, it’s modern, it’s soulful, it’s harmonious, it’s authentic, it art, in short, its music. Although the piece is classified as; “rock,” the rich vocal presence coupled with the dulcet driven guitar easily provides this song with a mass crossover appeal.

“Flame,” incorporates elements of alternative rock, blues, and even a slight hint of country while remaining rooted deeply in originality. If this song is at all a hint of what’s to come from Miles Blue Spruce, then I expect to hear quality music for years to come.

Are You Real? was produced by Catherine Marks (Wolf Alice, Foals) and Jim Kaufman (ANTI-FLAG) to help form the band’s new alternative vein that hearkens to the sonic likes of Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood, The Kills, The Struts, Skaters and even Nirvana.

Frontman Kyle Nicolaides‘s journey has come full circle, since the release of the band’s debut album Orthodox in 2013, which landedTOP 30 on Billboard‘s Heatseekers Chart, and garnered high praise from Rolling Stone, Fuse, American Songwriter, and more. After touring with Cage The Elephant, The Wombats, Soundgarden, STP, AWOLNATION and Jane’s Addiction, plus making their debut at the Reading and Leeds Festival, the trolling the depths and sludging through the bleak, Are You Real? is the story of how a rock star on the rise fought uncertainty and disillusionment to avoid flaming out. And, more importantly, how Nicolaides has come through the other side revitalized and focused, and with the best songs of his young career.
