When hip hop sprung in the 1970s as an underground urban movement in the Bronx, the focus was on emceeing; until pioneering Jamaican-born DJ Kool Herc made waves with his percussive breaks. After the invention of the Roland TR-808 drum machine in the 80s, hip hop quickly became a global phenomenon and a powerful social tool.

Today, hip hop is one of the most dominant genres in the music industry, with almost a third of all streams going to hip hop artists in the US. The popularity of hip hop continues to soar in the UK too. In 2020, hip hop artists collectively garnered over 50 million streams as rising artists such as AJ Tracey, S1mba and Headie One joined the likes of Eminem and Drake driving up the streaming numbers.

We are here to celebrate hip hop in all of its dynamic forms, from cloud rap to boom bap to drill to grime to spoken word hip hop to trap, whatever the fusion genre or world scene; we’re here to help you become a massive part of it.
