Lars Skorsen drag psyched-up blues rock back to its ritual roots in their latest release, The Mess Within. Evolved from a studio project into a full live-performing band over the past three years, the self-recording outfit writes, performs, and releases their own material with the passion and panache to pay homage while driving blues rock forward.
The Mess Within sits in the middle ground between Pat Benatar and Jefferson Airplane, while the atmosphere of The Doors curls around the progressive blues-rock licks and grooves. There is almost a mysticism in the smouldering air of the release which snakes at a serpentine pace while the vocals bring as much firepower as every episode of House of the Dragon combined.
As a band, Lars Skorsen clearly understand how to bring the magic out of the mechanics of blues, tempering the tones into a constant rush of tonal mesmerism. The guitars move like static rising off old amplifiers, the groove keeps its ritual-pit swagger, and the arrangement sharpens the teeth of the track’s raw bite.
The Mess Within lands like a smoke-veiled reminder of why the form keeps surviving. It’s progressive, blues-scorched and psyched-up, just enough to make nostalgia feel freshly volatile without embalming the past in reverence.
