We felt like the lucky ones when the garagey indie-rock duo Lucky Me landed on our radar with What’s It Gonna Take, all shimmering angst, infectiously angular guitars and vocals that sound like they have travelled through the deepest annals of indie to reach the modern age of malaise. Founded in Los Angeles by Connor Rivaldo and Kyle Briskin, who arrived from Arkansas and Georgia, the band already carries the road-bent voltage of a live act built for sweaty rooms and bad decisions.
If you hit indie clubs when The Killers turned the dancefloor into a frenzy, What’s It Gonna Take will shake the static through your soul. There is a silver-lit stomp to the single, the kind of guitar-led momentum that nods towards The Strokes, Phoenix and Kings of Leon while keeping Lucky Me tethered to their own aurally entropic style.
The duo has all the devil-may-care charisma to bring their records to life without leaning into brittle pastiche. The hooks bite clean, the guitars flash with jagged indie deity-level augmentation, and the whole track feels like it has been dragged out of a midnight Los Angeles backroom still buzzing from the amps.
If you like your indie anthems with Machiavellian teeth, prepare to bleed reverence for the renegade duo filling the void Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster left behind.
