Rose-tinted ghosts drift through the latest single, Cross My Mind, by the rising Georgia-born and raised artist, Erin Kirby. The track carries the breeze of cinematic levity which she has been edging towards throughout her career, carrying the sentimental warmth of country storytelling into a glossy pop frame while keeping the feeling close enough to sting.
Across hammered staccato piano keys, her powerhouse girl-next-door harmonies cut straight through the emotional soul of the twangy, country-esque sincerity. Cross My Mind understands the strange mercy of memory: the way someone can enter your thoughts like a breath of fresh air, a calm in the storm, then suddenly set the whole room ablaze again. It is nostalgia soaked through with affection rather than wistful resentment, drifting back towards the temperate saturation of Polaroid days while still wondering whether the feeling ever travels both ways.
Fiercely sweet passion that refuses to expire or grow bitter with time lifts the energy of Cross My Mind into a new plateau, while the title semi-ironically fulfils its own prophecy; it will cross your time, time after time.
Written with Aaron Eshuis and Neil Medley, Cross My Mind is enough to recontextualise every memory you hold, and enough to draw attention away from the likes of Kelsea Ballerini and Carrie Underwood.
Cross My Mind is now available on all major streaming platforms, including Spotify.
