Von’Jai’s latest single, Mystique, is the ultimate femme-fatale RnB Afro-pop reckoning with a bassline plotting for your submission and surrender. The London-based artist is fully in command of the solo spotlight she stepped into with her debut single, No Angel, in 2024 after moving away from harmonising under stained glass in church and wowing X-Factor judges as part of a mixed group.
Mystique carries a club-lit heat that reaches beyond surface seduction. Mixed and mastered at Redroom Studios by Klaudia Keziah and Kyle Hollow, the single uses Jake Davis and PMD’s beat-and-vocal production to frame Von’Jai’s voice into siren-warm, self-possessed resonance that’s impossible to flatten into anyone’s lazy assumption. The track understands mystique as protection; something sacred, which is echoed for listeners who have spent too long being misread by people with no appetite for depth.
The Afropop rhythm gives the song its centre of rhythmic gravity while the harmonies tighten the velvet-soft pressure. You can hear why Janet Jackson, Ciara, Beyoncé, Rihanna and Teyana Taylor sit in her reference field, along with the glossy girl-group sweetness of 3LW and Tyla’s global Afro-pop ease, yet Von’Jai’s signature has its own threat level.
After Se Mio and Love Language, Mystique feels like the moment her dominion over UK RnB starts looking inevitable.
