Indie Music Blogs UK

The term ‘indie’ in the music industry has become so ambiguous it has practically become as subjective as the meaning of life. Whichever way it is defined, it is still a massive part of the music industry in the UK and across the globe.

Originally, indie referred to how an artist distributed their music. Over the decades, it became a catch-all term for artists sharing the same sonic off-kilter edge; and, of course, the same moody yet inexplicably cool aesthetic. Indie, as a genre, only came around as the result of experimental artists in the 70s wanting to bring a new sound to the airwaves; instead of solely hoping for commercial success after appeasing one of the major record labels.

Indie artists adopted punk ethos they started to push the boundaries of pop. Instead of commercialising their sound, they pushed it into post-punk, shoegaze, synthpop, Britpop, avant-garde, noise rock and dream pop arenas. For all that separates bands such as Sonic Youth, the Cure, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Joy Division, Elliott Smith and Radiohead, there is still so much that ties them together, namely their attitudes and the loud discordant style.

Along with the bands, iconic venues such as the 100 Club in London, the Hacienda in Manchester, and King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow had a pivotal part to play in the traction of independent artists and music. New Indie labels, such as Rough Trade and Factory Records, were amongst the first record labels to truly embrace and encourage experimentalism and authenticity in the artists they scouted and signed – taking New Order and Joy Division as a prime example.

It may have been a while since there was an indie breakthrough act as successful as the Arctic Monkeys, but indie music has far from lost its resonance. Besides, Monkeys won over 42 awards and sold over 20 million records, so that’s going to take some beating, and they’re certainly not the only indie artists currently thriving.

The Welsh indie rock icons, the Manic Street Preachers, celebrated their first number 1 album in 23 years with the release of Ultra Vivid Lament in 2021. The Tarantino-Esque Liverpool outfit, Red Rum Club, released their debut album in 2019, and got to number 14 in the official album sales chart with their album, How to Steal the World, in 2021. Perhaps most impressively, the world’s first CryptoPunk rapper, Spottie Wifi, made just under $200k in album NFT sales in 90 seconds this year.

Ida Fiona is a candied bubble gum pop icon in her ironically subversive single, Anti-Stress

With the histrionically imaginative lyrics fed through her dreamy pastel-hued vocal lines, the songwriter Ida Fiona burst the bubble gum pop bubble with her single, Anti-Stress, taken from her 6-track EP, I’m Fun. While whataboutisms are explored, Ida Fiona subversively illustrates how easy it is to align our identity to idiosyncrasy and fear.

The Stockholm and Sandnes, Norway-hailing artist has carved out her own glitter-decorated chaotic niche in recent years with her discography which traverses everything from love to mental health to kitchen sink moments. Moving far beyond cliché lyricality and into the realm of intimate self-irony, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more relatable and candid voice on the airwaves. Her candied soundscapes are the cherry on the expressive cake.

Anti-Stress will officially release on March 31; check it out on SoundCloud.

Frances Cleave explored the Pepsi and Coke of suffering with her Southern Gothic single, ‘Freedom vs. Loneliness’.

The sophomore single, Freedom vs Loneliness, from the indie songstress Frances Cleave, is an ethereally arrestive shoegazey Clannad-ESQUE exploration of sufferance. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter takes inspiration from her haunted city of Charleston, SC; it doesn’t get much more Southern Gothic than her latest single, which will drive you to breaking point in the presence of her harbingering vocal lines that effortlessly gel with the phantasmally reverb-soaked pensive synths and evocatively plucked acoustic guitar strings.

The lyrics subtly explore the triadic trauma imparted by religious trauma, sexualisation and objectification but there’s enough ambiguity within the lyricality for the listener to apply their own contexts of freedom and loneliness. It’s a poignant reminder that the grass isn’t always greener, especially when the ground is hallowed whichever way you turn.

We can’t wait to hear what else she has in the melancholic pipeline; her debut LP is due for release late 2023, following her next single, which is primed for release in May.

Freedom v Loneliness debuted on April 1. Stream it on Spotify.

The 60s and 70s have swung back with riotous force in At the Arcade’s scuzzed-up slice of garagey alt-rock, With You

At the Arcade served up a sleazily scuzzed slice of garagey alt-rock for their latest single, With You, which puts the emotion into as much overdrive as the riffs. Somewhere between the 60s and the 80s, the riotously eclectic outfit finds its distinctive-by-design prodigal edge that will leave you ricocheting between past eras while affirming that THIS is the sound of the future.

Ensuring that the bouncy and brashy chorus guitars are just as infectious as the salaciously sweet vocals, With You is a track you definitely won’t mind tattooed across your temporal lobe. The Rotherham indie rock aficionados have been revered for their superlatively high-energy shows since 2017. It is about time the airwaves got a taste of their harmony-heavy fervour.

With You was officially released on March 24th. Check it out on Spotify.

Somebody is Waiting: HYPER CLASH reminds us of the possibilities on Everywhere I look there’s Angels

Urging us all to keep searching for cloud 9 no matter the windy weather, HYPER CLASH leads the way and shows us where the positive energy is on the terrific new single to heal with, Everywhere I look there’s Angels.

Bren Curran aka HYPER CLASH is a Hollywood, Birmingham, UK-based indie singer-songwriter who has a raw schizophrenic musical tendency electro sound.

I wrote this track after my son split from his first girlfriend ( She ended it after they both went to different Uni’s this year) He was clearly heartbroken and I was useless… I didn’t have any words of comfort other than ‘ I am here for you’…It bothered me that I fell so short…so I wrote down all the words of comfort that were passed my way from the wiser generation before… some might seem old-fashioned… but all come from the heart.” ~ Bren Curran

Scintillating from each angle and showing such strength and skill, HYPER CLASH is rather ear-soothing on this wonderful song with soul. Alleviating all worries and reminding us that the light at the end of the tunnel is close, we are treated to a superb soundtrack made with love and care.

Ultimately, the soundscapes from Testaverde are the embodiments of our true selves.

London Graffiti put the writing on the wall in their art-rock tour de force, These Words

Keeping the soul of grunge but stripping back the sludge, the Oxford, UK-based alt-indie rock outfit London Graffiti unleashed the ultimate aural eye-prickler with their latest single, These Words.

If you melded the pensive folky panache of Frightened Rabbit with the art-rock arrangements of Radiohead and the progressively dark atmosphere of Porcupine Tree, you’d get close to the evocative mark made on the indie rock landscape by the band that has already won the favour of plenty of mainstream radio stations, including BBC Introducing.

It is impossible not to be choked by the emotion-fuelled energy in the single, which also pays tribute to the National, Joy Division, and the Doves. Originality oozes from every effortlessly cool pore of These Words, yet never to the detriment of the projection of frantically inhibited dejection.

These Words was officially released on March 16th; hear it on SoundCloud.
