A&R Factory Present: Parson James

Some people might already be familiar with the name Parson James, though he hasn’t yet released an album. The American singer enjoyed success when he featured on Norwegian DJ Kygo’s 2015 summer hit ‘Stole The Show’, when it reached the top-10 across much of Europe. Additionally, his songs have already been heard on numerous episodes of Grey’s Anatomy.

However, the singer is ready to make his own mark as he readies the release of his debut album out this year.  His first offering is Sad Song, remixed by Ossian. The song sees James celebrate the end of a toxic relationship upon realising he is better off without them. ‘Now this might sound like a song / But I just smile since you moved on’ he croons over a dark and seductive saxophone laden beat.

There is always a risk of a remix stripping a song from the charm that made the original so special. But in the case of Sad Song, Ossian’s reworking takes the song to a whole new level and punctuates the liberating message of being in a better position out of the relationship than in. That said, the primary driver of the song still remains James’ rich and velvety vocals, harking back to an early Daniel Merriweather.

As Valentines Day fast approaches, many singletons will be looking to escape the flood of romantic songs taking over the radio. Sad Song is the perfect tonic for those who might not have a significant other to spend the day with but aren’t to cut up about it – in fact they’re happy to be free.

On face value Sad Song might suggest you’re in for another emotional rollercoaster akin to a song by Adele or Ed Sheeran, but this in James’ case this is definitely no pity party.
